MACHAKOS CHAOS : WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

Isn’t it amazing how complete is the illusion that the version of events presented by the media is always the gospel truth, the whole gospel truth, and nothing but the complete and unalloyed gospel truth? Take the weekend chaos in Machakos after the Gor Mahia vs Sofapaka match for instance. I was a little amused ~ amazed actually ~ reading and hearing opinions of people I would expect to know better frothing in the mouth condemning Gor Mahia fans for their unruly and barbaric conduct without pausing to question any of the oddities around the narrative.

All their sentiments were driven by the going perception ~ covertly perpetuated by certain political interests with the help of the media ~ that violence is Gor Mahia’s second name, and that her fans are such incurable hooligans that need no provocation to launch into senseless orgies of violence. Don’ get me wrong though. Gor Mahia have a lot of taming to do on many of their fans ~ particularly those that sit at the ‘Russia’ end of stadia during their matches ~ but that cannot justify framing them up of crimes they do not commit.

What I am pointing out is that we must not unquestioningly swallow every yarn that the media feed us hook, line and sinker even when such are laden with obvious inconsistencies. Isn’t it a tad curious for instance that there isn’t a single media house that has thus far posted, printed or aired a single picture of the ten million shilling damage that was inflicted on the Mzee Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on any of their social, print or electronic media platforms? To make up for that little inconvenient ‘deficiency’ to the tale, all they have presented thus far are pictures of the damage done to the Kasarani Stadium years ago when there were chaos there last.

However because some of their audiences are more discerning than others, they must keep tweaking the tale for it to stay afloat on some of the media platforms. That is why the online edition of the Standard newspaper quickly pulled down the picture on the screenshot bellow that had purported to be that of the damage caused, when a reader pointed out that it was an old picture of Kasarani last there were chaos there. That is also why during the nine o’clock news bulletin which I had waited with bated breath to see what pictures they’d air, they tickled me when they flashed this picture, but hardly long enough for anyone to make out what stadium it was.

All we have seen of the ten million shilling damage are two business premises in Machakos town with broken windows, a damaged mini bus, the shell of a burnt out car, and one of a motorcycle. What the media appear to have ‘forgotten’ to point out is the fact that the burnt car belongs to a Gor Mahia fan who had driven from Nairobi, and the damaged mini bus is just one of several that had ferried Gor Mahia fans from Nairobi and were stoned and damaged by hired hoodlums. This is because if they did, their narrative would not add up, and the hand of the flamboyant ‘teenage senator’ in the chaos may be revealed.

What then ~ you might ask ~ is the true version of what went down at Machakos? Admittedly, the match was an ill-tempered, high stakes one that saw players shove, kick, elbow and all but fight on the pitch. The tension on the pitch was bound spill over onto the stands, even without the Sofapaka players openly mocking the fans there, but they did, and some fans threw water bottle at them. As if on cue, the anti-riot police immediately lobbed teargas onto the stands to contain a situation that did not need tear gas to contain.

The idea here was to have the match abandoned due to ‘crowd trouble’ and the match points awarded to Sofapaka, in addition to having points docked off Gor Mahia, a situation that would have all but awarded Sofapaka this year’s KPL title through the back door. As the Gor fans scampered out away from the tear gas, they found police on horseback outside shooting more teargas at them. Those that made it to their vehicles parked near the stadium were shocked to find that several of them had been stoned and damaged, and one of them, together with a motorcycle had been burnt.

The police did not relent, and kept chasing the confused ~ and lost in a strange town at night ~ Gor fans as well as some locals along the streets. The anxious fans could not get back to their vehicles and get away from Machakos back to Nairobi because anytime they attempted to, they would be shot at or have tear gas canisters lobed in their direction. Some were cornered near a perimeter wall and teargas and dogs unleashed on them and had no option but to climb the wall to escape. Part of the structurally unsound stadium wall might have tumbled in the process. That's the only damage to the stadium, and that cannot cost ten million shillings to repair.

The fact that there are some hooligans in Gor Mahia who give the team a really bad name cannot mask the reality that the cops in Machakos were out to punish the crowd rather than to contain it, and that they were ably assisted by a gang of hired hoodlums in Gor Mahia jerseys to enact a predefined script. It is on this note I wish to educate Kenyan media and their uncritical ‘nodders’ that yes, there are Gor Mahia hooligans, but not every man in a Gor Mahia jersey is a Gor Mahia fan, and not every hooligan or vandal in a Gor Mahia jersey is on ‘club duty’. The Swahili say, "Mgala muue, na haki umpe"

Crazy that FKF have rescinded their decision on fans........its like giving license to thrill other matches
