The status of the ferrries makes them disaster waiting to happen.Instead of purchasing new ones we should consider constructing a bridge across the channel, after all longer ones have been constructed the world over.

Facts:

1) Ferry accidents claim colossal numbers of human lives when they occur - in Phillipines one such accident in 1987 resulted in 4,000 dead. Accidents are frequent also in Bangladesh (new name?). Mtongwe in Kenya lost >280 lives in 1994.

2)At different times of kenya's history ad mostly 80s, various options have been considered to link south coast 2 Msa: undersea-tunnel, overhead bridge, suspension bridge, bypass,etc. A bridge and tunnel were ruled out - bridge too expensive, tunnel owesmek during power blackout (there's a train that recently malfunctioned at the undersea english channel rail - cute being stuck in a stationary train while sea waves are crushing above u like there's no tomorrow,huh?)

3) A bypass appears most viable

4) Best if feasibility studies are presented for each of these options and the cost (and opportunity cost of each option)are reckoned in the decision.

hehee, permanent solution can be kila mtu akae kwao till Mwakere decides the best option

@Intelligensia,

I believe a bridge would be feasible.. possibly high, or opening.. its possible. Would be perfect for the suicidal though :)

Tunnel - perhaps not.

I am 99% certain that GoK will in the next 5 or so years, construct a road from Mombasa Airport to Likoni. The ferry crossing will drive away tourists to South Coasts in droves and is a complete joke. I was stuck in Likoni for 3 hrs going to Momba and 3hrs going back. Bure kabisa...

The is link is very doable as shown by this map

Word has it that today one of the ferries had a mechanical problem causing delay to get a sick person to hospital thereby resulting in his death aboard the ferry.Once word spread guys aboard the ferry panicked resulting in injury to others.We need the bridge or causeway to sort this out.
