Free newsprint. A culture change?

With the rising of free newspaper, free online news and instant updates and free tv news, are we seeing the beginning of the end of the premium newsprint?

I have a research study conducted for a small firm that shows that under 30 year olds do not purchase newspapers while less than 10% of under 35 year olds purchase mainly to look for advertised tenders.

Anyway, just thought it was interesting. Would you buy a newspaper? Why or why not.

BBI will solve it

I still occasionally buy the sunday paper even though you can get a soft copy. Monday to Fri I just look for the free soft copy!

I saw or rather read a Star newspaper today.

I did not see why people buy it.

I think the best way to gauge the impact of free online news is to look at the annual reports of the major media houses.

and it looks like people are still buying newspapers and purchasing advertising space going by this year nation media annual report which shows the newspaper division grew by 1%

Seems downloading of PDFs now works. Telephone lines to advertise do not go through though. Now at 110,000 copies with 60% distributed in major towns.

Fri 12 Sep edition:
pg 3: strip (1 advertiser)
pg 4: half (National Land Commission, KEMRI)
pg 5: one-third (NSSF)
pg 7: half (Ministry of Devolution)
pg 9: full (National Land Commission)
pg 15: full (Castle, 22444, Milele FM)
pg 27: full (Classifieds)
pg 31: one-third (SportPesa)
back: full (COOP)

Those guys distributing the papers are employees of Mediamax. Not new employees. They were there even before the free era according to my source

The mgt, according to my source, realised they were incurring lots of costs for distributing and returning unsold copies. Yet the sales were too low. So they opted for th free option where there would be zero costs of returning and more Kenyans would get to read the paper!

I think it's a great strategy. But they need to work on content.

xpatlink, a free magazine, has been doing quite well for several years now. http://www.xpatlink.info/

The people newspaper concept can easily work if they copy the xpatlink ways of strategic distribution.

Majority of the ads are government ads, so it's only working because PORK is the owner. If you look at the similar X News and count the adverts, no doubt those guys are suffering as of now.

There is an increase in non govt ads. You will also note that several private advertisers are taking up front and back page advertising like Airtel did today
