Russian navy claims to have driven away what was believed to be a U.S. submarine that entered the country's northern waters.
Russian state news agencies on Saturday cited an unidentified representative of the navy's general staff as saying the incident occurred Thursday in the Barents Sea, which lies off northwest Russia and is home to the navy's Northern Fleet.
The reports said the fleet sent several vessels and an anti-submarine Il-38 aircraft to expel the foreign submarine, presumed to be a U.S. Navy Virginia-class vessel.

The speech by Obama was laced with massive doses of hypocrisy.

The Russian ruble is down 30 percent against the U.S. dollar so far this year, causing runaway inflation -- 7.13 percent since the start of the year -- and a panic on the social networks - e.g "Ruble Apocalypse Now,"

Good news is scarce, and there's no reason to expect things to get better in the near term. That may be why Putin's speeches have grown heavier on historical references. A recent major anti-Western tirade was mainly about the past, and yesterday, in remarks to Russian historians, he presented a spirtited defense of the 1938 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
A poet and an anti-Putin political commentator Lev Rubinstein wrote in a recent post:

A category such as the future is absent from official rhetoric... Who needs a future when we've got a past like nobody else has! And if we work hard on that past by unifying textbooks, we'll get an even better past, a finger-licking good one. As for the future, it doesn't exist.

No more Chicken in Russia! - Putin
Quote:
Vladimir Putin sat motionless as the minister, seizing on the Russian leader's first major meeting with his economic team in months, itemized the challenges.

A recession is imminent, inflation is getting out of hand and the ruble and oil are in freefall, Economy Minister Alexei Ulyukayev told Putin, according to people who attended the meeting at the presidential mansion near Moscow in mid-October. Clearly, Ulyukayev concluded, sanctions need to be lifted.

At that, Putin recoiled. Do you, Alexei Valentinovich, he asked, using a patronymic, know how to do that? No, Vladimir Vladimirovich, Ulyukayev was said to reply, we were hoping you did. Putin said he didn't know either and demanded options for surviving a decade of even more onerous sanctions, leaving the group deflated, the people said.

Days later, they presented Putin with two variants. To their surprise, he chose an initiative dubbed "economic liberalization," aimed at easing the financial burden of corruption on all enterprises in the country, the people said. It was something they had championed for several years without gaining traction.

300 years of common history between Ukraine and Russia cannot be wished away by the West
