Believe you me,it is here with us.A US company known as WiTricity, has developed technology which powers light bulbs using wireless electricity that travels several feet from a power socket.
WiTricity's version of wireless electricity, converts power into a magnetic field and sends it sailing through the air at a particular frequency right into the bulb.Soon,we will see wireless charging of phones, laptops, electric cars and running of trains.......How about wireless grid lines in the future?

Njunge - it would be interesting to know how they plan to 'meter' such power. And what about risks to people (pacemakers, hearing devices)...I suppose it saves on laying copper wires but perhaps its time has not yet come.

@guka: Forgive my ignorance (plus I failed flat in physics) but if the power is converted into magnetic fields, what happens when using fork 'inside this magnetic field'! I shudder!

I must have been in the same class with Sasha.

I am also concerned about the health hazards with all the fields in the house.(TV. mobile phones, internet, radio and now electricity.) No wonder we are dying young. Its better to stay and sleep outside.

@Djinn,
Actually,Witricity idea is first to do away with power cords in your living room which they have successfully done albeit with few challenges.Eric Giler, the CEO believes that this will not be a dream but a normal way of life in 5 years to come.Remember Ford and the four cylinder engine??......Watch a demo here....

Any energy can be easily converted to radiation but have suitable rounds of wire coils e.g copper, about billing is pretty simple deactivate signal decoding after credit depletion

In the end....nothing really matters!!

@guka: Na kisu? Kuna visu za plastic? And Djinn asked a good question. What happens to people with pacemakers or braces! I can only see Tom & Jerry scenes in my head, with people ducking knives and forks! He he!

But seriously, this would be a wonderful advancement, but in 5 years? Someone say Vision 2030!

...what's it between Serbs (forget Milosovic) and electricity? The most famous Serb (Tesla) invented the alternating current,radio...many electricals...by 1909. He promised Americans wireless electricity back then and got funding from JP Morgan..but failed. Now in 2009 his tribesman (Soljacic)...also in US...does it for him...huh

Pole about my ignorance lakini I thought Tesla was Hungarian... anyway, will africa ever see such brainpower, such inventions, discoveries? [The sciences]

- Europe has so many: Curie,Tesla,Einstein,Jenner, etc
- America has too many to count: Sanger,Oppenheimer,Salk etc
- Asia has a good number: Bose,Abdus Salam,Chandrashekhar,etc
- Australia not sure but it has less than 30mn people.
- Africa: I am waiting (not Literature & Peace Nobels)

*** Apart from from a few countries the rest of us are fighting each other, civil wars, corruption.

**** Even the Japanese & Chinese are inventing like crazy. At the minimum they are improving current products. Look at the hybrid cars (Prius & Insight). The Chinese will produce an electric car under the BVD marque.

True we dont think anymore. We just wait for new inventions from other people and we are excited about it.

During the days of our grandfathers they used to invent alot but this was not documented

e.g

fire with no matchbox- they invented that if you cover fire with ashes you can preserve it for the following morning.

Building of mud houses

etc. etc

this is actually very old technology, its Telsa's invention in the 20s or 30s. he did not fail: his experiments with wireless electricity were quite successful. he was able to draw electricity from the 'atmosphere' particularly after a thunder storm. all one needed to do was acquire an antennae and they would have all the elctricity they need - for free. JP Morgan (who was funding the experiments) pulled off his funding and frustrated Telsa's work because 'there was nowhere to fix the meter'. the rest is history ...

Better to be at the cause of your experience rather than at the end of it. In all situations,be cause ...

I was watching Tom & Jerry last night and there was a scene where Tom swallows an anvil. Jerry then proceeds to torture Tom using a magnet. This reminded me of this thread.

No one has answered my question, (or was it a dumb one?) coz I still don't get it. Someone please, educate me!

@Sasha - '1960s resonant inductive wireless energy transfer was used successfully in implantable medical devices [26] including such devices as pacemakers and artificial hearts' -

that is an excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/...ireless_energy_transfer
