Moi was from a small tribe....the Tugen.

He almost did not become President it was only that God had his way...and that doesn't count...we want a Rendille or Turkana president....

@maka.

That's my exact thinking. A Dorobo president sort of thing.

@jagger, Tugen is grouped under the Kalenjin.

There's no tribe called kalenjin (just like there's no tribe called gema) rather it's a tribal coalition. The constituent tribes are nandi, kipsigis, ,marakwet, pokot, tugen, keiyo etc

the correct term is 'ethnic group'... tribe is a small band of people in a village somewhere. it's folly to name a 6 million strong group of people living across a country as 'tribe'.... perhaps 'nation' is more like it. the term 'tribe' is what most ethnic groups were before mkoloni.

and yes.... Kalenjin is a super ethnic group ( in the words of Snagglepuss... I say)
Luhya... "those of the same hearth"

Luhya is a tribe. Kalenjin, Gema and Mijikenda are not, and their small divisions are usually listed separately. We tried to come with a comprehensive list of 42 but got nowhere! Some Kaleo experts insist there are only 7 kalenjin sub-tribes but my little knowledge tells me they are more.

I think there are 40 tribes coz Luhya is not a tribe but a meeting. And Luo is a lifestyle.

I once pondered over this and realized a president from a minority tribe would have a very hard time! He will have few hardcore defenders and a strong enough constituency to back him up and can easily be cornered. It is next to impossible anyway unless we do away with democracy as we know it.

Wow!

Your argument is a load of bull. An incompetent person, from whatever tribe, will struggle to lead. The only benefit a candidate from the so called big tribes gets from his tribesmen is votes. Once the election is done he rises or falls largely on his own merits (ask one Mwai Kibaki).

Otherwise tell me how the Agikuyu have helped to keep Uhuru in power? They could not even protect him from flying shoes in Migori.

Democracy is being radically transformed by technology, and the enlightenment of the people. Economies will go through such changes that we'll need no affirmative action to create widespread equality. What we need to do is start to awaken and act on these prospects.

I want to believe you know what you are saying, which to me is also a load of bull. A shoe overthrowing a head of state.....that is a new one-yaani cheap shot. You may need to consult Gaddaffi and many others. Bottomline, you dont know what you are saying.
