I think time has come for us as a people [Kenyans] to reflect on the above.

Having a president from the largest communities [i've made the cut at 5 since the cut has to be made somewhere and i come from one of the big five] has not and is not beneficial to the country and it tears and wears out the Kenyan fabric.

It is very polarizing and that makes everything to take a political course even on matters non-political. The mentality of us vs them gains momentum. Instead of focusing on governance and development, the whole nation engages in unending politicking.

It also entrenches negative tribalism in public appointments since the larger communities can easily fill in all public positions on their own.

Checks and balances are minimal since the persons filling senior positions in the three arms of government, come from same big communities/regions.

When doing government tenders, members of larger communities can easily influence who wins such tenders.

Tyranny of numbers make it hard for meaningful change/check and balance to be implemented.

Sense of entitlement from the president's people makes him "their" president and not Kenya's president.

Etc etc.

How about we leave the presidency and deputy presidency to the smaller tribes/communities outside the big five?

How about that be put as one of the referendum questions and have it take it effect from 2022. [To give one last chance to the big five]?

If presidential candidates were to come from the smaller tribes only, MERIT would stand a better chance and not just having tribal numbers.

Governance would presumably be better since the sitting president/deputy would not have their big tribal block[s] behind them supporting all sorts of ills and the opposition would not be another big tribal block[s] out to frustrate the ruling.

Appointments would be on merit and not tribal leanings since there won't be tribal numbers to defend tribalism nor can the smaller tribes fill all the positions as it is.

The Kenyan fabric would stand a better chance to heal and get better since negative tribalism and hatred would be minimal/minimized. People would spend more time on constructive undertakings other than defending and attacking the tribal demigods. Fewer thinner goggles.

Would such a setting be better same[as the current one] or worse?

Remember to say why.

I once pondered over this and realized a president from a minority tribe would have a very hard time! He will have few hardcore defenders and a strong enough constituency to back him up and can easily be cornered. It is next to impossible anyway unless we do away with democracy as we know it.

Here i agree fully. Even a Kamba or Luhya president will have it very very tough .... mpigs and senetors will be with crazy demands everyday and impeachment will be the song of the day!

@masukuma.
You forgot to say WHY!

When a president is from a smaller community and delivering, wouldn't that be good for the country as a whole?
Even crime and terrorism rates would be lower with better governance and economy.

I don't think impeachment would be the order of the day since not all people [tribes] will be against or for the president. His/her deeds will be the judge.

@maka.

That's my exact thinking. A Dorobo president sort of thing.

@jagger, Tugen is grouped under the Kalenjin.

@masukuma. You have lost me on the red, clarify.

On the former, so if a client pays me more money than they ought to and i refund the excess, is that what is practical thing to do or the good thing to do?

When Ethiopia builds highways, electric rail, trams etc, is it the practical or the good?

When countries like Singapore, South Korea etc pull from our economic levels in the 1960s to first world countries, is it the practical or the good?
