@Prawn,
How did it go?
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Good people, l tried this biz in south nyandarua... and the good Lord has given the yield but there is a standoff between the farmers and the brokers on the type of bags to use... IS there anyone in wazua who knows of a good market... am planning to avoid the cons called brokers.

I am about to get some land for farming and have been thinking of potato farming and came across this thread. A couple of questions though

1. @ Prawn please share your experience if you ever started the project

2. @ Mwafrika or any other person. am mathematically challenged d'oh! kindly explain to me what you meant by "Optimum potato yield is roughly 10 tonnes per ha"

3. The land is in the rift valley and timboroa to be exact, are there any preferable species of potato for such areas and where would i get them?

4. How did all you guys who have the same project running circumvent the brokers

5. How logical is it to transport the produce from the farm to nairobi esp when you hire the transport?
Common sense is the most evenly distributed quantity in the world. Everyone thinks he has enough.

15 k per year is a reap off.
Average bags per acre depends on potato seed and fertilizer
800 per bag is a joke, the last time that happened was like 4 years ago
Climatic conditions also really matter

willing to offer advice

I know the area, and the idea is great. The cultivating and everything would cost much more. For 15k a year, consider the manure input- get it from Narok. (25k), and fertilizer. Consider that you need to buy the seeds also. I know the area well and willing to give a free unbiased tour (When am free).

@richdad has said most of it...the 15k depends on which area of kinangop you are referring to but its in the range... I have done 5acres and the cost from scratch is about 200k (ploughing, seeds, fertilizers, labour, chemicals)... expected produce is approximately 40-90 bags per acre after 90days depending on soil, rainfall, etc... at a price of say 1.5k lowest or 4k+...

Consider, as highlighted by richdad, the seeds are very expensive (you might consider doing this biz), a bag goes for 3-4k. Also consider, rainfall and weather... the cold season is no no no!
