The leadership of this country is so out of touch with the suffering of Kenyans. In the meantime it will have to take Kenyans with a conscience to do the little they can do in their surroundings to alleviate the worst of this suffering.

@ all

it is disheartening to see that our fellow beings are going through this life of hand to mouth while some of us have it in abundance...

i feel we as people are morally decaying at a speed that possibly we would not be able to brake to even if we wanted...

surely we must take turnabout and do something....

we must and it should start at a personal level...

as much as we got personal ambitions that needless to say calls for usage of money,we must try to understand that we are only lucky to have something in excess of our daily basic needs...

it starts with me then you, lets change the world...

you've heard me..
When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend

At the risk of sounding insensitive, let me make the point of irresponsible parenthood. The blame is not always with the government.

Some of those eating pig-meal chapatis were merely babies. Why are these people giving birth to so many children,so as to feed them of pig food?,Must people give birth to herds of children they cannot care for? These are irresponsible people in a large way and a part of the solution here is requiring these people to act responsibly with child bearing.

Our leaders have the education, wealth and ability to rear several children but you will find them with one or two. Sometimes you need to face the issues without cowering to fears of seeming conceited.

There is no food for everyone,so don't give birth and turn to ask what your child shall eat, serekali this, serekali that, simple!

@ Prof. Ouma

though you have some point, and having spoken your mind,i feel you have not offered a solution to the problem in hand...

does it mean that we just watch them die coz they procreated more than they can provide for?

@prof,
Can you hear the deafening silence?....I doubt you'll get many replies out of your rather twisted way of looking at things. It is the responsibility of the government to provide basics.......Very few Kenyans are asking for food.Give them land, water and security and they can fend for themselves.........The issue at hand is inequality and not family size and if you think otherwise, can you tell us how rich your mom was when she gave birth to you?

I have to agree with prof, our so called 'leaders' are a group of fattened pigs and as they belch in fullness the poor wanjikus who are only of importance after 5 years continue being afflicted by a multiplicity of maladies the country is facing. But population growth in this country is an issue which needs to be adressed. We may talk of saving our forests but also realise that the available resources can only support so much a number of people. And hey...dont bring forth a football team and then start saying things are elephant or the goverment isn't doing enough. If you cant maintain a team...panga uzazi!

see it through my lens?

@Njung'e- I concur. Much as @ Prof. has a point, his tone is not 'people friendly'
Poor pple procreate more oftenly due to factors of the 'Needs triangle' They go to bed early to save the little paraffin of 5/=. They assume they have taken supper even if it was juz an appetizer. (yes the kids shud not imagine another meal coming) With no financial muscle to show, the best option for the head of the house to prove his 'totalness' is to play bed minton regularly....hence more children
If our systems were well working, even the poor of this land would be living above current poverty levels. Fix the political problem and socio-economic equations would be fixed

Prof: am probably the only person who will tell you ''up yours' how can you possibly have a crude mind like that to people who had no choice of being brought into this world.

Its the responsibility of every Government to take care of its people rich or poor.

Its also the responsibility of every government to educate its population on the needy to have families that their can support.

Its also the responsibility of every government to encourage its population to give birth to more children where there is an ageing population.

Tell me where the government has succeded in any of this? I believe lowering the prices of unga by government, the poor people are not asking to much of a service.

@ All,I wish to agree in principle (not method or tone) with the prof. We need to always see every one of our human actions from the Cause-Consequense perspective, whether one is learned or semi-illiterate.

Why should I have kids, which even in the immediate circumstances,I know I can not take care of...and then later start crying serikali this, serikali that? I watched a HIV positive relative who was even advancing into the wasting stage marry not one additional but two wives, had kids with all of them (dead first wife's 4 kids notwishstanding) and even as he was being buried, one of his wives was pregnant. Mind you,the guy refused to enrol into ART. Before his death,I TRULLY wished he would actually waste away faster to save perhaps more women from infection and to save his future kids from suffering. All the women he married had and still have no source of sustainable livelihood and are unable to work on their farms to even produce food for consumption alone. What do you call a man like that.....? What do you call a man whos sells all his land and then migrates into a forest referring to himself as squarter or landless? What do yo call a man who takes along his 8 year old son into a fishing boat when he should be in school -and in the era of FPE? -Later he will be complaning of how his children are unable to get jobs.

I agree the government is supposed to make the environment conducive for all to eke if not make a living but the question of basic needs goes to the individual. You have no business having unprotected sex if you cannot take care of even a day old infant. And condoms are freely provided by the state.

But there is also the issue of life being unpredictable...this is where people need to help e.g orphans, times of natural calamities e.g drought e.t.c. I really simpathise with the pastoralist communities whose only economic activity is keeping animals. when drought wipes out the herds, there is absolutely no recourse and that's why some of them stage violent cattle raids to restock. What if the state did as simple as open up some of these places with as much as a all weather road to spur commerce to help diversify the livelihoods?

I am not saying there is equity in Kenya. Actually the contrary is true and we need to work on that like yesterday. But we need individual philosophy of being resposnible for every of our action to drive us.

What is the government doing to encourage people to do something for their country?... increase Mpigs salaries? .....Carpets,toilets,for the PM....New ego boosting Mercs for the President and VP?.....

If more the governement only got its priorities right .... we wouldn't be seeing such eye sores.....people eating pigs feed......What if there was a dam just next to the village?......Then we would squarely blame the villagers .......whether you have 1 child or 100 it doesnt matter .......when there is no food..... there is no food ......

The govt should provide an enviroment where people can be self reliant .....

Prof. may blame the poor for having many kids ....but the environment on the ground is so difficult that the pass time available is s*x.....with family planning method being out of reach for many,...kids become inevitable .....(anyway do you buy a condom of a 0.5kg of maize) .....Also abortions are not much prevalent in such areas .....These guys go to bed at 7.pm ...no radio no Tv......no food ....what do you console yourself with .......s*x

What is this business of removing the 'e' in sex? You only do that when a word is offensive or vulgar.

uwanja ...Please elaborate .....

tell us about your background .....

how you struggled on your own .....without wealthy parents ....

without food ...went to a primo 10km from home......passed with flying colours ...got a free high school scholarship at starehe.........until now you can open and close a computer......

I tend to think that you are the celelac/usain bolt generation .....

Life down there is really hard....If you would have experienced it .... I dont think you would say the same......

Yes people must take their responsibility, but the Government should also play its part....and fast.....

provide empowering environment by sorting out the food sector first...a country that cannot feed its people is a failed state...

@ Fundahh

nothing of the sort the cerelac i saw was in shops ...lots of hard lessons
i learnt the hard way from mistakes i made .. circumsatances may be bad but we see many successful people who refused to blame others esp the politcal class who feel nothing for the common people

what will it help those affected in Nyeri to blame Kibaki or the govt if i may ask ??? it just paralyses them with hate ...
