Online reports indicate that "thousands of Christians are fleeing Qaraqosh in Iraq's Nineveh province after militants from the Islamic State (IS) seized the town. Kurdish forces, who have been fighting the Sunni militants for weeks, withdrew from the town overnight. As many as 100,000 people are believed to be escaping toward the autonomous Kurdistan Region.

Eyewitnesses in Qaraqosh, which is considered Iraq's Christian capital, reported that militants were taking down crosses in churches and burning religious manuscripts. Christian families had previously fled Mosul after IS fighters threatened death if they did not convert to Islam.

IS has targeted other religious minorities as well. This week, tens of thousands of members of the Yazidi minority community fled the town of Sinjar. According to a Yazidi lawmaker dozens from the religious group were "slaughtered" after IS stormed the area."
