I have used the Orange 3G+ and Safaricom 3G modems for a while now. Orange claims a speed of 3.1 Mbps while Safaricom claims 3.6 Mbps. I have been getting downloads speeds of around 600 kbps with Safcom and around 30 kbps with Orange. I have no idea why there is so much difference between Orange's advertised speed with the real one. But one thing seems clear - the Orange data is being chewed at a much faster rate - about double Safcom's. Anyone in the know as to why this is the case? Despite its data bundles being more expensive, it seems that at the end of the day Orange is actually more expensive not to mention slower.

@Mpenzi, me I ascribe to Safaricom. And I tell you I've come to understand it. Saw your post and just now...

-in a basement, network only works in corner desk, zero sticks. Speedtest result 0.12mbps
-in another room, still low but other side of the building, network shows smallest stick. Speedtest result 0.54mbps
-normally when in town, around Galitos near Stanchart Moi Avenue, many sticks Speedtest result 2mbps

I've learned to always force 3G only to always see blue light. My only experience with Orange was when they first launched. Went to test in Westlands shop, remember getting speed of about 0.3mpbs

Laughing out loudly I migrated from safcom to orange due to cost effective measures. this has saved me kshs 1.63 per mb. besides I get 83% more data per 1000/= from the orange than the green. the orange modem connects quicker than the green. as for speeds, i have witnesed no differance among the two.

I use both Safcom and Orange 3G+. Safcom is definitely faster but more expensive. You can limit the cost by buying a 5G bundle at Kshs 6,999 which is valid for 90 days. As for Orange their main advantage is cost - for the 2GB bundle, you pay Kshs 1.1 per MB.

The catch with Orange is the validity of their Internet bundles which is 30 Days. However, if you top up, you are able to carry forward remaining MBs - but at the price of the new top-up. That is, if initially you bought a 2GB bundle and have a balance of 1GB but top up with a 50MB bundle at Kshs 3 per MB, your carry forward 1GB will be recalibrated (reduced) to reflect the new top-up, by approximately 2/3 - i.e. your 1GB now becomes approximately 340 MB plus the 50 you have just bought. I have not actually experienced this myself but have been told that is the way it works by Orange Customer Service. This really SUCKS.

As for the quicker consumption on Orange, can't say I have noticed it. And by the way, I use more of Orange due to cost but when I want Speed, I switch to Safcom.

Shame on you
@ mwanahisa,I had 27MB remaining at the end of the expiry period. I decided to top up with a 200MB bundle and my total unused data bundle was 227MB. No recalibration what so ever. it is like buying shares of a company at different prices, but you end up earning the same dividend per share.

If safcom is to get headway over the data age as it did with voice..as it ripsoff the affluent, it needs to stick to its base, the poor/not so affluent.. the bamba 50 and 20 grp

Ive worked all Xmass jsut to make sure my Orange modem works on Win 7..
Why did i go thru the trouble? Safaricom is damn expensive.

i open lots of pages with just 1mb of orange while Safcom chews up more than 1MB for just FB alone..

As regards Safaricom, my experience is bundles expire after 90 days; with option of adding more before the date.

As regards Orange, passed by their Westlands shop today, maximum speed according to them is 512kbps; bundles expire after 30 days with same option of adding more before the date.

It boils down to speed v/s cost as @mwanahisa intimated. Nobody's being generous, everyone's in business.

@kamaa - If you do not 'add' MBs to the bundle before your 90 days... you lose the 'old' bundle.

BTW, I lost MBs when I tried on Day 90. So your deadline should be Day 89.
