Hello Wazuans,
I am looking to buy a 3rd hand car (I.e. A car imported from Japan and owned by a friend-He is the first owner). Please share your experiences and advise on:
1. Insurance: How do i handle this now that it is registered under his name.
2. Transfer of ownership. How do i go about transfer of ownership and what is it likely to cost.
3.Are there any other documents or process i have missed out other than the two above?

#Do search with KRA, know the registered owner of the vehicle
#If you agree on the transaction, get him to give you his PIN, ID copies and sign an agreement form for sale
#Let him sign the transfer form and give you the original log book
#Insurance you get your own. He will remove his and him alone can transfer to his next vehicle. If the vehicle is very old, it may not qualify for Comprehensive insurance cover

Good breakdown.Thank you Tebes. The vehicle is a 2006 Toyota.
Two more questions:
1. Where do i get a copy of the transfer form? How much will i pay for the transfer and typically how long will it take?
2. Will i have to do a valuation to get insurance? How long will this take before i can get to the road?

I'll answer the second part of your question. Yes, if you use a reputable insurance company directly without going through a broker, they'll need a valuation which in many cases you have to pay for something like 600 bob with, but others may pay for you. Other brokers may just give you insurance without valuation.

You can drive using the insurance of the person you are buying from before you get yours if its still valid, no issues at all. Most insurance companies will give you a month's comprehensive cover then send you for valuation to determine if they are going to issue you with a third party or comprehensive insurance should your car get a good value.

Transfer form can easily be downloaded from KRA website. Effecting a transfer should not take long. Couple of days suffice for a Transfer. The real challenge lies in when the logbook gets to your postal mail. It may take long. But if you have someone who can physically collect it for you,the better. Transfer fee depends on cc of the vehicle and is usually indicated at the back page of transfer form. In case of a commercial vehicle,an advance tax at a rate of (cc rating ×1.5)KSh is payable. eg 4200cc×1.5 yields adv tax of KSh.6300. All the best.
