So he did not con you per se' ni mambo yake ilienda mbaya. You have said it, one has to take care with them. No matter how they may want to be honest with you, they are just hustlers trying to earn a living in these difficult economic times. When shove comes to push, they will use your cash to go to hospital, pay rent etc.
Those in Nairobi can protect themselves by avoiding to give them cash. They can que and call you to pay when it is time to, then they can handle non cash transactions. For us away from Nairobi, it might be a worth risk for now.
