Access is not dedicated. Thats marketing hogwash! I speed tested a 128k line at a friend's office (he had it installed ages ago, cost him 30k for installation), and it wasnt doing over 40k at any time. We tested severally, it was painfully slow!!

Further, I don't think any ISP will have "too many customers". Remember, Safcom must have suddenly onboarded a few million surfers in a couple of days, hence could not cope. Probably they can cope, but were not bothered to buy more bandwith given they knew that offer was a short-term thing.

I hear the cable co sells a 2mb line for $100,000 for 25 years. That comes to a paltry 25,000 bob a month. That line can be "subdivided" many times beacuse not all users have same surfing profiles. Even a straight division of 128k gives you 15 lines, each paying 4640/= that comes to 69,600 revenue. Assumes 70% cost income ratio (ridiculously high), they still make 20,000 clean on a real dedicated division. I'm willing to bet they do probably 50 lines per 1mb!! How can an ISP with 3000 connections make such profits?

True. Infact, I challenge you to find ANY provider with TRUE DEDICATED. All pipes are shared. Its like saying you have Msa Rd dedicated, only to find you share it with 1,000 other people! The question would be, what are their contention rations? How many people do they load onto a "dedicated" link?

Wikipedia states usual UK contention ratio is 20 to 50:1 per 1mb. US and satelite links have higher ratios.

Assuming we are at UK ratios (which sounds like hogwash, like Access marketing), that means a 2mb line that costs 25,000 a month will generate 100 1mb lines, or 780 128kb lines!!! WOW, revenue of 3.6m.

This wazu is difficult to use!!!

So I found ACCS profit numbers. Using EPS, they made 206M last earnings year. 70% of this was from the ISP i.e. 144M. The have 3000 connections, so simple av tells you they make 48K a year per line. That comes to 4000 per month, where they bill the majority 4640.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA that means the full 4000 you pay (minus VAT) is profit?

LOL. Anyway, this ISP business might be high capital, but it sure is also high profit once you get it up and running. And I have this idea that they like keeping us dissatisfied, so we can upgrade to the next product. Why is it that the same office, same no of computers, rigorously protected from viruses, has an increasing need for bandwidth upgrades?

CONSPIRACY: I think they have this software... In your first two or so months, connection 120% effecient... In the next two, 80%... by month number 8, you're crying, and they tell you to upgrade.

128kbps = 16kB/S so i really don't understand why you were expecting 40k.Shame on you Its always the the value in kbps divided by 8 to get your download speed in KB/s.

@inf*nity, nice name elegant. But not as elegant as the big Access@Home box, that you could mistake for the DSTV box. Are you sure you have that Alvarion unit at home?

Posting from the office and realised that with Access you often but not always get what you pay for e.g. office has a max 256k link down but we're a couple of guys sharing. So maybe we all get a fraction that comes to 1/10th per person at Kshs 2,400 per person. But for that I can use my Safaricom alone and max at 2mbps @##!!???? d'oh!

Maybe the answer in life is to be simple like Forest Gump - don't think too much, just try them all and use the fastest as long as the money adds up.

Thanks im glad you noticedLaughing out loudly
Yeah i just got access @ home 3 months ago & I use the Alvarion router. Small light and powerful.

Sharing a 256k link a couple of guys is just a nightmare.

I wonder how reliable their system really is, it being a shared service and all. For instance the 1Mbps package, on a shared network...My fear is signing up for such a service and receiving them super slow speeds similar to a cyber cafe.

Can anyone vouch for zuku? would like to know how the service is like esp. after the new packages zuku just launched. how well is their network performing? They say that the higher the bandwidth you sign up for the better (or, less clogged) the service as majority use the 256 and 512kbps plans.

I really need to know how well the zuku network works as i am considering switching to this service.

I have used Zuku for the past 1 year. I was on 512kbps and have moved to 1 MBPS for the last 3 months.

The first thing I do daily is to do a speedtest.net run. I have registered 700kbps to 1 MBPS on a regular basis. Recently everyday I have been registering 1MBPS.

I am now waitig for their triple play cable to reach my residence. Am informed of speeds upto 10MBPS on the cable.

If the speeds you speak of are actually true, we should all make the move! please tell me more about their triple play cable...

I dont think I am the only subsciber for Zuku in Parklands. The Zuku people tell me that the fibre to home will be available between March to June next year but cannot give the exact time frame.

Hey blackthought hope this isn't late i use Access@Home 512kpbs.
I totally get what i pay for. Here is a screen shot of the speed test run from speedtest.net taken today at 11a.m

As you can see from the test i get 0.51Mb/s for Download and 0.10Mb/s for upload.

For those that don't know Communication Solutions Ltd. is Access Kenya.

Hope this is helpful.Laughing out loudly
