Possible scenarios:

1. The attackers were purely alshabaab from Somalia. Revenging KDF invasion of Somalia. And KDF joining AMISOM. I saw one of the claims that alshabaab said they attacked Mpeketoni because it is inhabited by Christians from elsewhere...that makes it also possible for another scenario(number 3 below)

2.The attackers were Kenyans. Kenyan Somalis and Bajuni. Or MRC. Reason for attack here would be Islamic terrorism and ethnicity.

3.The attackers were Kenyans, locals of Lamu who've crossed into Somalia and joined alshabaad. Attack would then have killed two birds with 1 stone: Expell the settler upcountry people and act as alshabaab's revenge against Kenya.

I increasingly see the point in no.3 above. Coz first, as I've pointed out, there was a claim that alshabaab came to remove the Christians settlers. Why would shabaads be interested in 'historical injustices'?

The attackers spoke to each other in Somali but some also in FLUENT SWAHILI

Quote:
I could hear them conversing mainly in Somali but occasionally two or three would talk in fluent Swahili.

Then there's this article written by someone who seems to be a native of Lamu. It was written in 2011. He says govt was relocating Kikuyu IDPs in the Lamu region thus intensifying the feeling of injustice among locals.

He warned that unless the govt stopped it, local youth would cross the border and team up with shabaads

Quote:
Above all, the new influx of IDPs which is further displacing the people of Lamu must be brought to an immediate end and the new arrivals returned whence they came from. If steps are not taken to deal with this situation, do not be surprised if you come to hear Lamu youth crossing the border into Somalia to train as terrorists and return back to fight for their homeland. What is happening now is recipe for future violence. Be warned Kenyans and start championing the cause of Lamu people for justice.

alshabaab, kenya office/branch should be the one to blame. The attackers carried flags similar to the one below

An eye witness account from a journalist:

RINK

C&P

.....As it were, he had walked out to check on the security situation when he was spotted by one of the attackers. “Waria,” they shouted at him. “Wewe ni Muislamu (are you a Muslim)?” He answered them by going down on his knees and saying a prayer. .......At some point, the attackers wanted to burn down the entire filling station but Guyo told them that the property belonged to a Muslim.......Once in a short while, unsuspecting motorcycle riders would approach the junction where they were stopped, asked whether they were Muslims or not. If they were not, they were shot in the head at close range. In all, about six people who arrived on motorbikes were shot at the junction.

After 1am, the gunshots went quiet but at about 2am they rang out again after two vans drove into the petrol station. It was a reunion between the attackers and their colleagues who had remained in Mpeketoni to carry out further attacks.

Initially there were about six to 10 men, but after the vans arrived I could hear a huge group but could not figure out how many there were.

At dawn, the gunmen left the petrol station in two vans and a Land Cruiser.

Firstly, humans are ruled by means of strategy, things are usually never what they appear to be. Who, or what, one chooses to see, and say, depends on political motives. And the level of indoctrination- the intended effects of strategy.

I don't doubt that Cord have a strategy to help them secure their needs. And one weakness or opportunity they may wish to capitalize on is the heightened insecurity. If this is true then the counter-strategy would be to also associate the insecurity with the 'opposition'.

It makes strategic sense if the al Shabaab can be feared without firing a bullet, and sow confusion to boot. So why not claim credit even where it's undue?

Interpretation is always open till one commits to a strategy.

The day these theories shall make sense is when the president uses the info he has to send someone to jail for a looong time. He sits at a more privileged position than us, he should know who is the enemy. And he should use the sword that was handed over to him to defend us from the enemy. Until then, we are on our own.

Could the president be in the dark about the real security situation in Kenya? Could there be a group of composed of Kibaki leftovers in the current administration that the president is not in control of this ggroup works to ensure that security warnings are ignored...........
