Two of my buddies were arguing on whether it's possible to change the IMEI of a handset........To the techies in the house,is this possible and if so,why do manufacturers go that extra mile for something that can easily be hacked?

I don't consider myself a techie in GPRS and mobile phones but I don't think you can change it.
It is possible though to get rid of it either deliberately or consequentially. For instance if you buy a simlocked phone on a Safcom or ZAin offer and you want it to be unblocked so that you can use either service, the unblocking rids the phone of it's IMEI. This identifier (IMEI) is manufacturer assigned, just like your laptop's MAC address and therefore you can't have another.
My humble opinion

Yes it is possible to change the IMEI of a phone.
the IMEI is stored in a chip. Some phones (e.g old DCT3 nokia phones) can have this value changed using special software whereas for ALL phones changing this chip changes the IMEI.

ALL phones can have their IMEIs changed! some easily, and some will involve some form of 'cracking' to achieve the same.
so,we can say that for the time being, some of these latest phones in the market cannot have their IMEIs changed,(coz no one is able to at the moment). like for instance Nokia N-series phones cannot have their IMEIs changed
