Motorists driving under the influence of alcohol were on Thursday afternoon caught up in an impromptu operation at Mlolongo along the Nairobi-Machakos highway. Speaking to journalists during the operation, Mr Cosmas Ngeso, the head of road safety at the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) said that they had realized motorists were driving while drunk during the day, thus continuing to pose danger to road users. “We are warning those motorists who think that this exercise is only done during the night to be aware that these operations would be done anytime and anywhere . We will not relent in ensuring that Kenyan roads are secure and accident-free,” said Mr Ngeso. The operation, which was carried jointly between the authority and the Kenya Traffic Police saw several motorists arrested, some giving excuses of drinking the previous day. “This is against the law. When then are we then allowed to drink?” lamented one of the arrested motorists. However, Mr Ngeso warned that those who felt they needed to drink should look for a driver to take them home, hire a taxi or find alternative ways of reaching their destination. “If it is a must for one to drink, then he/she must have a prior plan of how to get back to their homes,” he said. He expressed disappointment that most of the accidents that have been happening during the day are attributable to drunk-driving. “Since most operations have been happening during the night, most motorists have taken advantage, drinking during the day without minding their safety,” he warned. He added that the arrested motorists would be taken to court soon to answer their respective charges.

NACADA has said it will buy more breathalysers and dispatch them to all counties to stop drink driving. Chairman John Mututho said breathalysers have reduced accidents in Nairobi hence the need to use them in the counties.

Addressing the press in Naivasha town yesterday, Mututho said Nacada is working with the National Transport and Safety Authority to buy the devices.

“We have plans to buy sniffer dogs from Israel and this will be used to conduct raids in learning institutions to deal with drug and substance abuse,” he said.

Mututho said the authority will hold a crisis meeting today to discuss the Auditor General’s report that Nacada has lost more than Sh150 million. He said the meeting will discuss the report before deciding on the next course of action.

Mututho said he was not surprised by the report as he had first raised the issue of funds misappropriation in 2010. “We shall be meeting on Friday (today) to discuss the report before inviting EACC and the CID to act,” he said.

Mututho said the anti-drugs authority is collecting samples of all brews in the market for testing. “We shall put a notice in the newspapers calling on all brewers to present their samples to Nacada for testing,” he said.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s son, Fidel, on Friday found himself tasting life on the other side of the world.
After being arrested along Ngong Road for drunk-driving, he was forced to spend the night at Muthaiga Police Station, sharing a cell with some hardcore criminals, including street children.
Upon being released the following day on a Sh20,000 cash bail, Fidel was overheard cursing how life is difficult in Kenyan cells.
