With two submarine cable already operational at the East coast of Africa and all major ISPs and mobile operators hooked up what is your experience on download speeds, small and medium sized video streaming and international calls? jio attached the following image(s): j040373215.jpg (8kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

Safaricom streams really fast, the cost is muhadhara, a guy who works 4 an IT company tells me he has speeds to download a movie in 25 mins, and he has a proof, by the wkend he has 10 movies! Now thats speed. Thats what am talking about. LOVE WHAT YOU DO, DO WHAT YOU LOVE.

In my experience, the arrival of the cable has not really revolutionalised the browsing experience as I thought. I thought that once they landed, I would never wait for a youtube video etc.... Hmm Anyway, maybe we should give them more time. But Safcom is EXPENSIVE! And I hate that model of charging for the data both uploaded and downloaded.... Form is temporary, class is permanent

Anasazi, At the company I used to work for a while back,KDN put us on fiber in August(a 1Mbps link).I have never seen anything like that. You could stream 3 different videos on YouTube without buffering at all!A 60Mb file would download in 60seconds.... That was true broadband. However, not so many smaller companies have been moved to this kind of service and definately individual consumers will have to wait for a while. The ISPs have the bandwidth, its just that they are holding on to it and maybe trying to create profitable business from it. Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

bird_man, I have heard the same thing about kdn lines. while they may not be super reliable, the speeds they give I hear are mind blowing!!!! If only one, just one ISP would have the guts to be the first mover, we would all have decent relaible affordable internet. Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming

I am looking at changing my useless service provider soon. For access at home (no pun intended???) seems like Tangerine and Zuku provide speed at reasonable costs. Anyone here that can share their personal experience with Zuku? Safcom is fast but the cost is just as fast.

@Kularaha, The KDN speeds are crazy....but for a 1Mbps link say you lived in CBD, you would need to fork out 48k/month.We used to pay around 200k/month for the same link before August! It only makes sense to have it if you are a company. The problem is that almost all other ISPs are buying the bandwidth from KDN.Other ISPs I think are still trying to come up with profitable models. Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

The prob I have seen with ISPs is that they have sooo many excuses yet we all know they are making supernormal profits. Explain to me, how can one isp sell a 256k line for 1500/=, another at 4500/= and yet another at 6000/=?? The product is almost homogenous so what is different? Its like saying one bank sells dollars at 75/=, another at 225/= and yet another at 450/=, with the guy selling at 450/= claimining to have the best service! Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming

KulaRaha....haha!Thats a funny one. I have however noticed that though the product could be the same, customer care and fault diagnosis are very different.KDN's is very lousy.Telkom's is non-existent, AccessKenya's is quite good.So you also have to think about that when considering the prices. Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Birdman, I agree, the better the service the higher the price. But my question is, what is the premium you would allocate better service? 20%? 50%? 300%? 4000%? Surely, anyone above 15% premium for service is cheating. Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming

@Kularaha.... I must say you make a good point about the pricing models.... I dont even want to talk about what my office pays for 256K. It's downright atrocious. Form is temporary, class is permanent

@kularaha - Vote with your wallet... Access provides better service & have an SLA... Safaricom provides speed+potability... So as we know cheap is not always cheap... Margins for commodities vary (15% or more???) look at safaricom... Yu charges 6/- yet safaricom gets away with 15/- across networks... Why? Vote with your wallet... Greedy when others are fearful. My experience in fiber is as follows: Access in the Office, Safaricom elsewhere.
I first experienced true fiber on Safaricom, and verified on Speedtest.net based on recommendations of SKerians. I've learnt to force bambanet to 3G. I tell you if the WCDMA shows 3/4 sticks, I've found download speeds of 2mbps - very comfortable.
Now Access is okay. In the office we received 256kbps dedicated, verified on Speedtest.net. We get what we pay for. Numerous visits / emails by all the customer service ladies.
Conclusion: any chance I get I'm on Safaricom. Desire: need to see at least 2mbps links in office at reasonable prices say 32,000/=

True.. Access is not perfect, but at downtimes are not too many, and they do try their best to do some customer service. As for Safcom, as much as you pay an arm and a leg, the service is not as atrocious, as say, Zain... Form is temporary, class is permanent

@KulaRaha, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but...
Was a Zuku convert from day 1 before the fibres and all. Office made payment, guys came over to our office, measured something, came back again, searched for those invisible waves, came again and again and again. Three months later, nothing, asked for refund, 4 months later got it.
Hope the Wimax can now reach our office and tech guys decide to call them again...

I use the internet alot and most of you know I rant alot about internet connection here. I have stopped ranting. i have been with safaricom ( if you want to stay broke use them), zuku or wananchi ( it was hell on earth), tangarine (same as zuku), name one I have not tried. I haven't used YU though That is until I came accross Orange. I think they are simply the best right now and until i hear of some crazy offers I am not moving one inch. They liberated me from safcom. My ratings are simple 1. Orange 2. Zain 3. KDN - if you can find them 4. zuku 5. safcom - I don't care how fast they are, they are making super normal profits as my kids are hungry....they can offer free computers if they want, I will never go back.
