Joyce Banda lived in Kenya for a few years and was even married to a Kenyan, did we politicize her outlook too much? Because this educator and grassroots women's rights activist, has decided to cancel vote tallying for an election she's a contender in, citing irregularities. She's only been an acting President for 2yrs after the death in office of the incumbent, Malawi's fourth & first female president, but these gymnastics obviously do not respect gender. So if she isn't going to run in the new elections, why nullify the current one?

The attempt to nulify the election was made at the point when the good lady was placed third in the race. Her biggest nemesis (DPP's Peter Mutharika) was leading with the the cleric-turned-politician (MCP's Lazarus Chakwera) coming in second. There is some historical acrimony between Madam President and Peter Mutharika after Peter tried to block mama (then the VP) from taking over the presidency following the demise of the then sitting president (Bingu wa Mutharika - Peter's brother). My guess is that mama is comfortable to have anyone else, other than Peter, take over the leadership. The skirmishes with democracy end, thanks to the Courts as is often the case in Africa. Joyce Banda congratulates Peter Mutharika. Not sure if it's just the election she lost, or along with it her credibility. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news...arika-wins-election.html

Found this interesting history on the net Quote:Zambia and Malawi Political facts (for those that don't know)
1. Both Dr. Kaunda and Dr. Kamuzu Banda were
longest serving President's of both countries and their roots are somehow not traced from Zambia and Malawi, respectively. Both Kaunda and Kamuzu, having a common slogan of "Wamuyaya" (Forever), had something to carry in their hands as symbol of authority;
2. President Chiluba, born in 1943, took over from Kenneth Kaunda and Bakili Muluzi,born in 1943, took over from Kamuzu Banda. Both Chiluba and Muluzi went on to seek a 3rd term of office but failed after extreme opposition to both bids. Both Chiluba and Bakili divorced their wives on account of infidelity
3. FTJ Chiluba brought in Levy Mwanawasa and
campaigned for him single headedly; Bakili Muluzi brought in Bingu wa Mutharika and campaigned for him single headedly
4. As fate would have it both Mwanawasa and Mutharika won those elections.
5. Shortly after being elected as President, Mwanawasa fell out favour with Chiluba and dragged him to court over corruption; Shortly after being elected as President, Mutharika fell out favour with Muluzi. The new Malawian President took his predecessor to court over corruption. Now it gets interesting; Chiluba was prosecuted by Mwanawasa administration. Muluzi was prosecuted by Mutharika Administration. Mwanawasa won a 2nd Term of office Mutharikha won a 2nd Term of office. Mwanawasa chose Rupiah Banda as Vice President - Mutharika chose Joyce Banda as Vice President. Mwanawasa died in his 2nd term of Office due to Cardiac Arrest - Mutharika died in his 2nd term of Office due to Cardiac Arrest (both deaths were predicted by TB Joshua)
6. Rupiah Banda took over from Levy Mwanawasa due to death of incumbent; Joyce Banda has taken over from Bingu wa Mutharika due to death of incumbent. The people who took over from the dead Presidents in both countries are named "Banda"!
7. After 3yrs, President Banda in Zambia lost to veteran opposition leader Michael Sata. Joyce Banda who has taken over the Presidency will face election in 2014 which will make her serve 3 years.......... What will happen to Joyce Banda?
Are these facts mere coincidences this simply shows that Zambia and Malawi exists on the same prophetic pathway. Both Zambia and Malawi got their independence in 1964 and both use kwacha for their currency. I take this opportunity to sincerely congratulate the President Elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Vice President Elect Mr. Saulos Klaus Chilima on their victory in an election that was closely contested.
I wish the President Elect and the Vice President Elect every success as they take up the mantle of leadership for the nation of Malawi.
It is my prayer that the new President and his Government will successfully guide our nation to greater heights of prosperity
I would like to thank all Malawians for the support rendered to me and my government during my term in office as President of this great Republic.It has been an honor and privilege to serve my country, Malawi, and more so as the country’s first female president.
During my term, significant reforms that aimed at taking the nation to the right development trajectory were implemented, and I appreciate the support and encouragement that Malawians and all other well wishers gave me during these reforms
As I leave office today, I am happy that there are visible positive outcomes of these reforms in the macro economy, in governance and observance of human rights, in food security, in women’s empowerment, in rural development and international relations to mention but a few.
I am happy that the country is at a better place than was the case when I assumed office in 2012.
I therefore wish to take this opportunity, to urge all Malawians to support the newly elected President Professor Mutharika and his Government as they take on this foundation of progress and endeavor to develop Malawi even further.
In conclusion, while these elections have been tense, I would like to urge all Malawians to move forward as one nation, to remain united, to uphold the rule of law, and continue being peaceful and calm as we head into the next fifty years of Malawi’s future.
May God continue to protect and bless our Nation, Mother Malawi.

Joyce Banda has set a new low record. How can an incumbent lose an election which she has organized?
