On the other hand, The Military here is darm darm super super rich and very well trained. They also get annual aid, equipment and training from the US as part of the Peace deal that they made with Israel after the war in '79. It is compulsory for all men in this country to do a one year military training. Though there are some exceptions like if one of your parent is not Egyptian, if you are the only son or if your father is deceased. These people do not take training and military funding lightly. The Military has a lot of wealth and it has invested in Real Estate and much more.
Even Israel with all its power and might is afraid of Egypt. Isreal had stolen Egyptian Land, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Egyptian army, under the leadership of Anwar Sadat, humiliated the Isrealis and forced them out. And they have never tried anything like that again. The Egyptian army, under Gamel Abd El Nasser, defeated the British and French to reclaim the Suez Canal. The Egyptian people worship the military and they value their strength. Chepkel Egypt is the strongest military power in the Arab world. period. But its skirmishes with Israel ended up with a bloodied nose including one instance when all their fighter planes were wiped out before taking off. Israel only withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula under a peace arrangement and under a military assault. You should careful reading about Egyptian war history as seen through Egyptian eyes. But all said, asymmetrical war tactics which avoid direct military confrontation have empowered some informal military players. The Somali warlord Aideed embarrassed the U.S in Somali but it doesn't mean that his militia was more powerful than the U.S Army, specifically the Marines. MC ...Angola should rank very highly in Africa The Israel-Egypt War did not end with a peace deal. Egyptians defeated the Israelis on Youm Kippur!!. This is known as the 6th of October war, great military day here in Egypt and a feast day!!! Immediately, after Egypt won the war Anwar Sadat got on a plane and went to Israel and brokered a peace deal. Israel would not touch any more of Egyptian land and the two states would coexist in Peace. The Israelis were shocked at Sadat's actions but since they were humiliated they gave in. By the way this is the deal that got Anwar Sadat assassinated. Many people in the arab world did not like Sadat's new friendship with Israel. what you are talking about happened earlier in 1967, i think. And it was under the reign of Gamel Abd El Nasser. I think you should read on Egyptian History more closely

I still think in terms of Equipement and sophistication SA should behead of Egypt but you know usage is another issue altogether!!!! Maybe technology but n terms of Equipment regardless of how outdated or old they are. Egypt has the largest equipment compared to S.A while Nigeria has the largest army in terms of its numbers. When we went to somalia, I stumbled upon this board http://eastafrican.userboard.net/

@Chepkel there has never been a consensus on who won the 1973 war but this reminds a story that once, during a meeting with Hosni Mubarak over the Suez Canal - some Arab nations had demanded that Mubarak bars Israel from accessing the canal - Sharon wondered loudly what damage a small nuke would do to the canal if it ever was blockaded by the Arabs. The Arabs relented......the Jews are luantic I tell you Israel is not usually bound by the many treaties and conventions in other parts of the world, and is the typical loose cannon. They are not the sort of country you start a needless war with!!! ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

The Egyptians made an attack on Youm Kippur. Youm Kippur is one of the holiest day among the Jews. They were absolutely suprised when Egypt attacked. Israel will never give up any land that it grabs unless it is defeated in war. They left Egypt alone because they were scared of the egyptian army which put up a great fight. Unfortunately, Palestine was unable to do the same and this is why Israel was able to grab all the land that it has now
