One of the clerics who was delivering the Friday mid-day sermons told Makaburi followers who had jammed the square that they should continue slaughtering non-Muslims. The cleric who spoke through the mosque public address system told followers not to engage in protests but instead look for guns and kill “non-believers.” “We are not holding any street protests over the killing of Sheikh Makaburi, but our protests will be to get guns and kill the pagans,” said the cleric only identified as Sheikh Amir. The cleric urged the youth to revenge the killing of Makaburi in the presence of journalists and police who kept watch at activities at the mosque from a distance. But even before he could finish his inciting utterances, the youth broke an interview that was being conducted by journalists with one of Makaburi followers and began throwing stones at police in total defiance at calls from the cleric to shun any violence. They attempted to grab a camera from one foreign journalists, forcing policemen to fire in the air. Several trucks and pickup vehicles loaded with armed policemen, were immediately called in and to helped stop the demonstrators from advancing further. After being chased away, the youths converged about 20 minutes later and began advancing towards town centre but police were quick to disperse them by throwing tear gas and firing in the air. The attempted protest came even after the organisers, led by Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid said they had heeded calls by leaders to postpone the demonstrations.
