@Alba....hakuna shida, fortunately for me and other Messi admirers he'll have about two more opportunities to prove himself at the WC starting with this June in Brazil....this might be his year!

Let me make one more point for wale hawamjui Diego:

When Argentina won the World cup in 1986, the rest of the players were very average or below average. Aside from Maradona, the only other notable player was Valdano. But Valdano would not even make the starting line-up of other top teams. The other striker was Burruchaga who played for Nantes in the French league scoring about 4 goals per season !

Even their goalkeeper (Pumpido) was very shaky.

Its fair to say that Maradona carried Argentina on his back in 1986 and carried them all the way to the trophy. 5 goals, several assists and opening up spaces for other players.

How exactly do you compare players from different eras and determine who is better than the other? Football has evolved, rules have changed, technology has taken over etc...sigh.

Messi is good but he is notch below the greatest ones. He will get full credit when he does it in a league other than La Liga, say the EPL or Serie A, and also when he does it at the World cup.

He needs to succeed at the world cup so he can prove that he not just a beneficiary of the Barcelona system. Great players can thrive in any environment.

Until such time, I would not rank him among the greatest 11. If I were to name the best starting 11 ever, the forwards would be Pele-Maradona-Cruyff.

Would wish to see how he fares against clubs like Stoke City.

On several occasions he has beaten the best epl has to offer(Man U Chelsea, Arsenal,Man City). So i wonder why guys want to try him with the strugglers. He is good. But Pele once said let him score 1000 goals and win 3 world cups then we can talk. Will Messi ever reach the magical 1000 coz currently the UCL can be placed at higher level than the world cup

You miss the point. Stoke City are not strugglers. Their brand of soccer is out of this world...especially the old Stoke City. Ever wondered why aseno always find it hard to beat them? Reason...STOKE CITY PLAY TO THEIR STRENGTH! MESSI WOULD FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO BREAK THEM DOWN.

Messi is a football player,SOCCER as the Americans call it.
Why do you want Messi to try American football? Coz that's what Stoke City play.

Most of the EPL teams thrive on athleticism, not SKILLS,with zilch tactical know-how.
Hoof and run kind of thing.

If i were to rank the World Cup now,it ranks lower than UCL. If current World Cup holders were somehow to play current UCL holders, i think the UCL holders would win hands down.
Which country has top cream starting 11? The elite European teams have top drawer players from every part of the world.
If Messi benefits from Barca system, why is it that Barca struggles without him?

In the days of Pele, World Cup was the premier football tournament, that's not the case any more.
What has been left with World Cup is national pride.

Messi is top notch whether he wins World Cup or not. World Cup is not tennis singles, he needs a solid Argentina to win. As it is, their defense is porous.

It's better to agree to disagree than clutching on straws to discredit Messi.

You hate him you hate him but that won't change the fact that the lil' one is a magician.

@Alba.......Like i said all Messi needs to do is win the WC otherwise he is the undisputed king of club football. Maradona pia alikuwa Barca at some point and its fair to see that his time there didn't quite work out as planned....btw he's also of the few great players who have never won CL, Ronaldo (the phenomenon) is also on the list. Unfortunately for Messi he's not about to leave Barca ndio tujue if he can succeed in another club but i'm sure if he signed for a club like Spurs they would become EPL contenders.

There's a goal Messi scored against Getafe sometime back i think its the best piece of individual brilliance i've ever seen.....i'll post it once i get it online.

Are you talking about this goal at 13:28 in this link I've also shared in a previous post? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXkPBX838ZI

He got a standing ovation from the crowd for that goal.

Johan C. , no one less, agrees Messi is a strong contender for the best all time..I agree.

BTW I have nothing against Messi. One day he may prove me wrong by showing he is better than Maradona and Pele. In fact I sincerley hope he leaves Barca to go play in the EPL or Serie A. Lets see what he can do against those Italian defenders who know every trick in the book.

And I can hardly wait to see what he does in the WC against good teams. In the first round he will play against Bosnia and Iran whom I dont think will offer much resistance. But the game against Naija could be interesting. Last time, Naija and especially Victor Enyeaama effectively bottled and foiled Messi.

Oh and the person who said the World Cup is no longer the premier tournament should share that Janjaweed he is smoking Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly

I just realized that this thread is about Messi setting a Barca record not a world record. All the same congrats to Messi. Barca has had players like Cruyff, Maradona, Romario, Stoichkov, Ronaldo and Etoo. So this is a big deal.

And that is it folks, final score Real Madrid 3 - Barcelona 4.

The two best players in the world are supposed to be playing today but only one appears to have turned up at the ElClasico.

Messi is such a joy to watch. I would give him 9.2/10.

CR7 performed below par today. I would give him 6/10

Di Maria was OUTSTANDING Applause Beautiful delivery of crosses. I would give him 9.3/10

Benzema finished perfectly. I would give him 9/10.

Hatrick indeed...na mapema ngapi???.....why can't Barca ever win a clean game against a top team without controversial decisions????

Back in 2010 they thrashed Real 5 nil, game safi with Mou in charge. Ama hiyo si game kubwa?

Why do opponents choose to foul Barca? Sergio was supposed to foul Neymar then what?
Iniesta was "played" and a penalty was not supposed to be called?
Ronaldo's penalty with contact happening outside the box?

The thing is, if you are skillful, you will be hacked down and that's what happens to Barca.
For teams like Stoke City, they would be lucky to get one.

The better you are, the more chances of everything, INCLUDING penalties you get.

Exactly, I can see Real fans clutching at straws here. Do you disagree with any of the penalties awarded to Barca? As mentioned the controversial decision was Ronaldo's penalty that was actually committed OUTSIDE the box!! Deny tuone.

how he does against teams in epl or seria a? and here i was thinking that he actually has played against such teams in ucl!
world cup where players are restricted to plying only for their respective countries as opposed to club football where clubs are free to get the best players that they can...world cup where the team members practice and play together for qualifiers and or when fifa fix in the friendlies as opposed to club football where footballers go to work to train and play with their team mates...i see.

Apart from the Ramos red card, though deserved, that was undoubtedly the most balanced, end to end El Clasico match I've ever seen.

Messi has broken the Stephano record for most goals scored ever in the El Clasico.

See all 21 goals against Real here (HD quality), including the one in 2:32min where he takes on a bunch of Real defenders enmasse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8IZFmQwgFc

Simply brilliant.
