According to this Standard article, Nairobi has now surpassed Lagos, Luanda and even world class cities like Cape Town in terms of cost of living

Which if true is amazing because 60% of Nairobians live in slums.

I dont know if Nairobi is actually the highest but it is surely up there, yet it should not be if things were done better.

16% VAT is cited as one reason.
But I think there might be other factors driving up the cost of living

- Kenyans penchant for land speculation is driving the cost of housing up.

- All that petrol that Nairobians waste stuck in traffic jams. Nairobians likely use twice as much petrol as people in western cities use for the same distance.
- Constant stop and go driving is very bad for your engine and leads to mechanical problems.
- Poor Roads: Cars in Nairobi are in constant need of repair because of potholes

- Cost of security: During my praimo days, people did not even need watchies. Now Even slum dwellers have to hire maasais to escort them home.
- Cost of crime: Having to replace stolen items

- Salary inflation: Kenyans constantly demanding higher salaries leads to rent inflation --> It allows landlords to hike rents
- Inflation caused by rich refugees: Rich somalis coming as refugees and willing to play exorbitant rents

- Poor city planning: With rental units cropping up everywhere, it makes it more expensive to build infrastructure like roads or to even provide basics like water.
- Land grabbing well connected people also makes building infrastructure expensive
- Inadequate housing : Instead of building city council houses, they have left it to private developers

And many other factors

Kidero has been a disappointment thus far but I dont think there is anything he can do about this particular issue.

Bullshit report as usual. How do you compare the cities without taking into account change of lifestyles.

"Some hungry mzungu has a dead end job in London where he lives in a 2 bedroom nondescript municipal flat 20 meters from the train terminal, takes child to a public school while the wife house keeps and works half day.

He takes up a job he is unqualified for in Nairobi, calls himself an expat, in Nairobi he moves to a 5 bedroomed house in Kitisuru, gets free househelp, garderner, 4 askaris, a fuel guzzler for weekend escapade to the Mara, Nanyuki or Rhino charge, school fees for kids at them expensive schools and allowance for wife to hang out at Artcaffe."

Guess which city is expensive

hahaha. But some of them are qualified some are not (some are qualified in one thing and come here to do totally different stuff). but both ways - these guys never go back. I had a boss who after doing rounds in a number of countries in Africa and was from Mexico... landed here and it was just right... Nairobi is like a goldilocks zone for Mzungus.

This is a no-brainer because Kenya's real estate sector is red-hawwt and a huge component of our 5%+ smokin' GDP growth each year. Nairobi is "poshing up" very fast. Just go to places like UH, Westlands, heck..even Ngong road near Kilimani and you just see world class buildings coming up daily that are even better than those tattered 100 year old crumbling ones we see in London, NY and elsewhere. A red hot real estate sector means red hot rent for upscale properties. If you own an ambassadorial house in Gigiri for example, you would be a fool to charge less than 7000-10000 USD per month in rent. The mzungus can afford it so they pay and go write in their gazettis that Nairobi is expensive. Good for us!

Nairobi is expensive because it is slowly becoming thugs paradise. Even that thug of Samburu has invested his county loot in houses in Nairobi.

BBI will solve it
