By the way, after ministries were reduced from 40 to 18, where did all the staff who were working in the merged ministries go to?

The merging of ministries of agriculture and that of livestock doesn't mean any agricultural officers or veterinary doctors were fired. It's the same with all the other merged ministries. It's only the top administrative structure that was changed regarding where and whom the officers report to. Otherwise all the staff (and departments) are still there and the workers are permanent and pensionable. Moreover the counties have been on a recruiting spree further increasing the public wage bill.

Including tea girls, drivers, cleaners etc?

Yes, since no office was abolished. The officers still need to have tea prepared for them, their offices need cleaning and as per govt policy officers never drive themselves hence drivers must be there.

I respect the decision to start trimming the wage bill, and from the very top. That is clear leadership!!

@jagger, pay cuts are put of economics. If something isn't sustainable you do something about it.

Is time to have a national formula to calculate state salaries. I am not sure but I think Germany have one.
Say the highest paid is the president, his pay is put into the formula and you get all the other salaries to the lowest paid.
Our president should peg his salary at 500K as the highest paid and lets see what happens to the lest.
I believe the wage bill will come down by 5-7% while the lower cadre will have a pay rise thus cooling the political temps caused by the exercise.
Lets have a national referendum on this issue.

This is what SRC is trying and I think the president's pay cut was their recomendation but this wont go down easy with the majority. If it was the MPs and those many constitutional offices taking a huge pay cut, maybe the effect will be felt. But now the MCAs want more, MPs want more, Governors want more, everybody wants more...Sad Wish the more the ask the more results we get. Like for example, if the team working at the Huduma centre was to ask for a rise in two years, I would support. They are so proffesional and they are changing the face of the Public Service. But tell me why, I dare ask, should those guys at KRA timestower ground floor, or those at land ministry, ask for a pay increase?

That is why the rationalization of the work force is important.. as much as many may not favor it .. otherwise there is alot of duplication of duties and in the end we accomplish nothing by cutting down the ministries..

Good work Uhuruto. Had they taken a 20% pay rise, wouldn't people be complaining?

Idlers can pack and go to hell, sorry go home.

Pay cut ni lazima.....the ball has started rolling downhill.

Thereafter, lazy bones should be sent home.
