I heard its about exams.... they were to do a pop quiz a day after they reported back from suspension...

It doesnt matter their grievances.... but how does harassing motorists, looting, and disturbing the peace of other kenyans solve their problems?

Very disappointing..especially when one considers that the lives of 10,000 students will be disrupted by the actions of about 200.

My thoughts? round up the 200 rioting stone throwers, charge them in court [public order offenses],give them three-week community service sentences in their home villages [e.g.,cutting the grass on the roadsides].

Then when they finish the sentences, they will be automatically forced to repeat the academic year...if you didn't know, the statutes of Kenyan public universities do not allow a student who has missed more than two consecutive weeks of learning for whatever reason to be examined.

Harsh? May be. But it will send a very clear message.

am not a KU alumni but my younger brother is fourth year to finish somewhere august at KU

What he told me,

That VC wants everyone in future to wear uniforms in future....dont know how...and didnt understand how on earth...even lecturers has to have some sort of shirts labelled KU.
That VC gave a deadline for payment for exam fee to be Feb09 while in the past it was as long as you pay one week to exam.
High handedness of VC.
And many more.....I thot it was a joke until I heard more demos.

It shows people have never known how you lead masses......the pyschological way of leading is hard subject to some of our leaders.

Why should the VC bother with payment dealines as long as you pay before exam. This is public university not private.
Why should the VC dictate how people should wear...uniforms.Even strathmore does not have uniforms but should be smartly dressed.

disclaimer.....if at all the allegations were true....the author cannot be held responsible.

@Burning Spear

i know you must be siding with your younger bro but i will tell you,he will play victim whether he is actually a victim or not. He is a student anyway so the best way to judge is to here both sides.

I know, and you know that there is no Principal,VC,C of any institution of higher learning who would impose UNIFORM on students - UNIVERSITY students. It wouldnt even cross his/her mind. The VC only talked of 'dress code'. We know how our brothers/sisters and especially sisters dress in college. The only thing this lady is trying to do is to prepare them to the decency expected in work place. Every work place has a dress code. May be if she used 'decency' they would understand - somehow.... what is wrong with universities having dress codes. I am not sure she is asking more than them being decent..... no tumbo-cuts,miniskirts,shorts etc. Thats how strathmore is..... May be she felt the students have gone over-board in their 'dress down'.... may be dressed down literally.

As for fees, who determines when the fees is to be paid? the management. And isnt VC part of that management? and wouldnt she be the best person to convey such information being the head of the institution? Even in real life,we have changes, this could be one of them. I believe they must have been given ample time and they didnt heed and expected an extension of a deadline.... its human nature - not many like change.

but someone make me understand - what does it have to do with a motorist going about his business?

@Burning Spear: You ask; 'Why should the VC bother with payment dealines as long as you pay before exam.'

The answer is simple....CASH FLOW!!!!

Ask yourself this: What is the exam fee used for? Buying exam stationary. If the VC can get the cash way ahead, she can save on bank overdrafts and also get the stationary on discount for paying early....the way Gakuo did with road-marking paint....By the way, private institutions ask for the exam fees at the begining of the term when tuition fees are being paid.

I say again: round up the 200 or so hoologans and give them cummunity service sentnces...then suspend them for a year...no need for disciplinsry hearings [see my previous post below]

So,if they expell all the students, will this be the end of student strikes in universities?......I saw that VC talk on TV and even if you are right, there are times you don't have to look like someone on the verge of an orgasm as you expell people from college.......what happened to VC's like Mbithi?

Much apologies......am not supporting the burgers(rioters) but I put down what my younger told me.

But.....leading is different from managing......leaders and managers.....
the rotting in our public universities cannot be corrected in one night but in bits why.....because mob psychology and peer pressure is very bad.....this thing has eaten in our society just like what you saw in PEV of 2007/2008.
.....hard talk cannot solve anything....all of you have seen that.
Get it this way.....Joshua Kutuny and Ababu were busy inciting people ....regarding Mau evictions....sme poor kenyans went ahead and burnt the forest....all of us will loose...
my point....we should address the underlying causes of all this and without this...my dear sisters and brothers...we will only scatch at the surface of the problems.

students will give you 100 reasons why they went on strike.

admin will give you 100 opposite reasons why they went on strike

add the police and even a chicken will be arrested in this scenario.

The truth is that most strikes are caused when admins don't know what is happening to students and vice versa. That all falls on the VC and the college board. I hope some of you saw what the Dean at Masinde Muliro has done to avert such messes in that campus on her own.

You can expell them, you can charge them more and even hide their food. If you don't at least pretend you know what they are about, then it will go on. Sad but true.

As for the police...For someone who was once hit by a bakora as I was doing my exams in college,I have major misgivings on their abilities to arrest anyone who stole computers. KU for those who have been there is big. A fire can be in one area as you are sleeping. Woe unto you if the cop finds you in your bed sleeping, you will be beaten and of course taken to court the next day for rioting in your sleep.

Then SK members will say you really were rioting in your sleep.

And yes,in this case I am prejudiced. The duty of any varsity admin is to make sure strikes never come to students going to the streets (As Mbithi did time and again).. Not telling guys on Sunday that they have exams on Monday just to prove that you are a tough chick.

The moment I heard that I knew there was going to be a riot. why couldn't she imagine such a scenario. Bure Kabisa. This is on the VC including my bros mat that was caught in all this nonsence.
