If you think hard, you will find it odd that the first hour of day is in the middle of the night! The clock of the old swahili wazees is more sensible, the first hour starts to lapse soon as the sun comes out. ..there is a clear demarcation of light and dark.
And really there is no sensible explanation why 00:00 is at midnight,..they pulled that one out of their ass...it became a convention that we now follow, just like London's Greenwich is the 0 degree longitude. Why not Tokyo or Machakos?

yeah, makes more sense to demarcate a day the swahili way.but it must have been borrowed from the Arabs as the Jews have a similar method. During Jesus' cruucifixion, it is written that at the ninth hour it suddenly turned dark.ninth hr is saa tisa or three oclock

Its not just Swahili, Jews and Arabs. In our local languages, we also transit from one day to the other at sunrise. Eg in Kikuyu we say Thaa Imwe, Thaa Igiri, Thaa Ithatu etc

The bible is translated so it is not easy to know the time written in the original scripts.
The notion of equal day and night applies in the tropics only. Some countries have less than 3 yrs of daylight during winter.

Is it right to call the language Swahili?? I thought the people are the "Swahili" and the language is called "Kiswahili."

You are right. Nairobi's misinformed middle class call it "Swahili" due to TV influence yet they cant even speak the language properly.

In the rural areas everybody knows its Kiswahili including the originators at the coast. It all depends on your status.

That said, according to the Bible and Quran the day begins in the evening, hence "saa Moja" and ends in the morning hence "saa kumi na mbili". The Jewish and Islamic feasts and festivals follow this pattern.

The week begins on Sato hence "juma mosi" and ends Friday hence "ijumaa". Thats why we have sabbaths beginning of fridays in Israel and muslim days of worship.

Hope that helps

@Loolest. You should apologize for trying so hard and failingso miserably in implying that Africans are nothing but "borrowers".

Apologize!
