is it true you have to do again inspection in port, which costs 6000 for a van,my agent told me

If you have a KEBS approved inspection report from Japan I.e JEVIC, QISJ then you don't need any other inspection

I have "CERTIFICATE OF ROAD-WORTHINESS KS1515:2000" issued by AUTOtERMINAL.

Importing a used car is an easy do-it-yourself process. From the comfort of your office seat, you can buy a car straight from Japan and have it delivered to your parking lot. The process takes 30-45 days. Below is a step by step guide.

...

Mandatory clearance fees
Import Declaration Fee: This is normally 2.25% of CIF value with a minimum of Kshs 5,000, this is the first payment made in the process of clearing. It normally takes a few days to process.

....
The links to the CRSP list is:
http://www.kra.go.ke/not.../SEPTEMBER_CRSP2010.xls
the CRSP value and age of the car should be entered into the valuation template whose link is:
http://www.kra.go.ke/cus...%20Motor%20Vehicles.xls

Once the dutiable/customs value is arrived at the duty is worked out as follows:
1.Import duty: is 25% of dutiable/customs value.
2.Excise Duty: 20% of dutiable/customs value + import duty.
3.VAT: 16% of dutiable/customs value + import duty + excise duty
In addition. The duty is also quoted inclusive registration, normally Ksh12,000 for a usual passenger car.

.....

Just taken a section(s) of original post. How do I go about IDF? My van is arriving today!!!

You needed to have applied for IDF immediately you received the documents, but not to worry. Talk to your clearing agent and send him an electronic copy of your documents, namely the invoice, inspection certificate, PIN number and ID copy. He can apply for IDF over the weekend and then you pay first thing Monday. Then begin your clearing process

@Vj, Thank you for your invaluable voluntary information and encouragement. I wish you were my Agent!

In addition to IDF, Import duty, Excise duty and VAT I paid 15,445/= for registration of my van and since it's a commercial vehicle it had to be inspected(kwa shimo!!!) by a MV inspector and advance tax must be paid also.

@JK, is it possible to get ISUZU Tipper Truck in UK?

Assuming you're inquiring about tippers from 18 to 32 tons.
It is almost impossible to get an Isuzu tipper.... Unless a previously used one was imported into the UK.
For UK Isuzu (NQR) and Mitsubishi (Canter/Fuso) trucks are limited to 7.5tons or slightly more.

The 'preferred' large tippers available are Mercedes, Scania, MAN, Hino, Volvo.

According to KRA laws, one cannot import a vehicle that is more than 8 years old. Now, my understanding of this is that a car that was manufactured in 2006/12 (December 2006) can be imported since it is only about 7 years 3 months old as of today.
Is my reasoning right?

Your reasoning is absolutely right! The change-over from one year to the next ALWAYS occurs in January. You could have imported a 2006/01 car in 2013/12 but a 2006/12 couldn't land in 2014/01. See it here: http://www.the-star.co.k...rt#sthash.Ecfixnsg.dpuf and I quote, "The Car Importers Association of Kenya wants the Industrialisation cabinet secretary Adan Mohammed to intervene and have the more than 2,000 units released.

The 2006 used motor vehicles are said to have exceeded the eight years age limit hence are being held at the port."

The 70% depreciation for 8 year old cars landing in 2014/02( this month) applies to vehicles whose first month of registration is 2007/01 or/and 2007/02 only. It looks unfair but that's how it's done.

how possible is it for one to buy a unit lets say 2007/6 now and shipped it in 2007/7 (when it becomes a good month) I found out that there is a big price difference between those categorized as good months and those that are not.

You meant buying now a 2007/06 unit to ship it so as to arrive in Jun or Jul this year? You may have to pay for storage/demurrage!! On a more serious note, I wouldn't be comfortable having my unit in Japan for 3 or 4 months. Think of "the low price" as a discount on units with high duty!
