This should rest the debate

M-Pesa was created by Nick Hughes in 2003, then working as the head of social enterprises at Vodafone, which has a 40 per cent stake in Safaricom. Hughes had in 2003 made a proposal on delivery of financial services over mobile phone. In 2005, he got funding from UK’s Department for International Development to a tune of £1 million (Sh140 million), which was matched by Vodafone in both cash and staff time.

Who still thinks it's Kenyan? Safaricom have never said it. They even sponsored a tour of Hughes in Kenya some time back. Almost every time Michael Joseph was being interviewed he took time to explain Mpesa origins...

Mpesa is Kenyan no doubt, it has Kenya "peculiarities" written all over it, just the usual "intellectual theft" from Africans!

with a light touch.
but what i meant is that mpesa is an obvious step such that any tech person would have come up with the idea. what may have happened is vodafone was working on it at the same time some kenyan techies were also giving proposals on something like it to safaricom. of course when safaricom came up with it there were bound to be those who felt their ideas were stolen.

Why do you sound so happy relaying this 'news'? Without Kenyans' participation, mpesa would have suffered the fate of many failed concepts that are gathering dust in libraries.

Concept was invented at Kamiti prison in Kenya by some crooked criminal trying to defraud some greed Kenyan of some money..... remember the "nitumie airtime ndio ni-release zawadi yako" scams?

Technical design and implementation was invented by Hughes.
