I have been in the car export/import business for over 15 years and still fail to understand why this industry cannot be properly regulated. There are so many junk in the country,mainly as a result of people importing 'cheap' cars from countless foreign companies that sell salvage,cars that are not even good for their own country but they feel the need to dump it,cheap in every sense as a mater of fact,cars with no known history,mileage wound back to make deal attractive etc...making it so difficult for genuine exporters who value quality and would like to change the Kenyan motoring industry,like us (WWW.JOBPLANTCARS.CO.UK) to compete.How do you compete when cars are being sold for $1500? Surely,what type of car is that? Can someone enlighten me on what we need to do to eradicate the motoring problems in Kenya AND what Kenyans themselve need to do to change the sytem.....don't you wanna walk the streets of Nairobi and not be chocked because of pollution caused by the so called 'quality imports' from Japan or wherever'? @jobplant I have imported cars a number of cars and I agree with you. I know of many companies but I have never heard of you company and I believe many SKerians have not. Why? Why do you think most people call all washing powders OMO? My friend 'There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.' Take an extra mile,as you have started doing and we will start buying from you. As one SKerian quoted here,‘Kenyans are greedy’ your profit margins are wide. I am looking for a Nissan X trail for a client 'There are plenty more fish in the sea,I just don't have a very effective net' Doors of opportunity don't just open , they have to be unlocked & it's up to you to turn the knob.

Quoting @ Jobplant ...when cars are being sold for $1500? Surely,what type of car is that?
Answer: I bought one priced 1400 USD and it still runs,2 years later. Not all Kenyans will buy cars worth more than $10,000.

@k22
I thought so too.... but thats the way to do it! Address the need,test the market then move from there.
@JobPlant
If you can guarantee quality,there are many kenyans willing to buy quality (not necessarily showroom) cars and getting to trust some of your competitors in the industry is just next to trusting a politician! A few months ago a friend and i went to check out some cars. We entered this yard in Westlands. There was an awesomely beautiful C-class merc,metallic,sky-blue,beautiful eyes but when we sat and touched a few things insides,some parts (like the ones that holds cups)started falling off and you could see the gum used to stick them!!! Seriously,a merc with parts falling off??? Apparently it was an ex-singapore!

@KenSaf...you seem to know quite a bit a bout this market... expand on '..margins are too high'........ and please let me know what FACTS you have used to arrive at that statement. Again,do you know why different companies cater for different customers groups? One thing,JobPlant sell both new and used cars. WWW.JOBPLANTCARS.CO.UK - Leading UK exporter of motor vehicles.

Hi jobplant,nice way to market your business.UK is a good market for used cars of the rare and large capacity.e.g. audi Q7,s 4.2 quattro,VW golf R32 but for simple mercs,BMW's and japanese cars u cant beat japan.
Jobplant didnt tell u that some Brits import their impreza's,Evos and other sports cars as used cars.Try buying an EVO from Japan thats why mitsubishi evos r sooo expensive when compared to impreza's.UK does miles hence 1mile= 1.6Km.a 30,000miles car has done 48,000km
UK has two other disadvantages concerning used cars. 1. Grading-there's no standard grading sytem for used cars in the UK.i.e. no grade 4,3,2.........as in Japan(to the best of my knowledge)
2. Freight cost-UK freight costs for an average saloon are around Ksh 120,000(i could be wrong aint sure).Japan is around US$ 1000,Singapore and Dubai are much cheaper than both
UK isnt all bad,for SUV's and sports cars its still quite good.But for the bread and butter that everyone drives i think not.

@jaykay, I like your response and what you have said is very true,the UK is not for the bread and butter you see on the Kenyan roads. For SUVs,it is the place to source from. I must admit that,we are still able to compete at some level when it comes to cars like Avensis,VW Passat,Merc E-CLASS,7 series etc The one thing that makes the UK stand out is that,most cars comes with a service history - so you know what you are getting. Not sure all cars from Japan,Dubai or Singapore come with this at all? WWW.JOBPLANTCARS.CO.UK - Leading UK exporter of motor vehicles.
