we are giving ODM; TNA and URP 203 M. Does anyone here understand why we should fund parties? What's the logic?

coz its in the law? coz if you don't fund parties publicly - you cannot put laws to limit political financing from external parties like corporations. you cannot limit the effects of corporatocracy on democracy! benefits of limiting political party financing extend to campaign financing making sure that big boys are limited in their spending and giving a small boy/girl with not so many resources to burn a fighting chance.

plus - it is the first way of ensuring that political parties are not private property or briefcase entities.

It costs money, truckloads to run a political party and prepare adequately for general elections. This creates 2 problems.
1. Only rich people like Uhuru and Sonko can run a competitive campaign leaving out people who are probably more qualified like me out of the race.
2. Once someone is in office, he feels like he bought it and feels the need to recoup his/her investment. Bamba 100, SGR et al.
Funding parties reduces these problems but not completely.

OK, so we want to avoid external influence by corporates and foreigners? Do they really fund parties or they fund their favorite candidates? Have we stopped campaign fundraisings too? I feel that political parties in Kenya are useless and lack support away from their leaders. Which is why central was Narc in 02, PNU in 07 and TNA in '13.

BTW @ lengu, following your logic, then Nicholas Bewhat's National Vision Party would be big!

Campaign budgets too will be restricted to specific max amounts. No more spending billions on a campaign by individuals.

i understand the logic of why political parties should be funded 'publicly' but i don't agree with it. one question comes to mind - what measures will be put in place to enforce the rules?

not to be pessimistic but in this Kenya ya qualamid, money will find ways into parties and campaign fundraising beyond what is provided for regulations - can we expect real action to be taken against these parties if they behave badly?

exactly the problem that is being fixed. once we limit campaign financing we also limit corruption (why would TNA/Uhuru spend 17 billion to get into an office that gives him 2.5 million a month?). same thing about MPs and other people that we love complaining about.

I would support Zero funding.
Why should a citizen earning under a dollar a day pay tax to be used partly to fund parties.?

Sometime back, figures in the region of billions were being floated. Kind of stories that can give serious kenyans ulcers. 200m is a welcome relief, much as I disagree with the entire idea.
