Where is Chairman Adan Mohamed in all this? It is obvious that the VC has lost control. Don't condemn me as sexist, but an institution with men MUST be headed by a man, unless it is a disciplined force. Look at Sunshine School, and now KU.

Kenyan students are really myopic, they waste their time in campus like univerisity is a destination. they enjoy being sent home for times on end while their counterparts in private univerisities move on. they clear campus late (not mentioning the 1 plus year they waited before going to university) then join the world and find that what they were agitating for was plain stupidity and of zero value. In my experience at Egerton loosing about 26 months of time in campus, none of the issues people complained about affected me individually nor were changed because of those agitations- but i joined the job market 2 years later now am playing catch-up. The only useful thing the student union did is petition in court the univerisity using collected signatures on some academic issue and it won.

My point, the VC is working, earning, the lecturers are working, earning, the non teaching staff are earning with or without the students being in class. but the stupid students are the only ones who are paying and staying at home, getting injured and guess what they will pay for their stupidity;if they think the 1k was too much let them wait for the bill on this one - they may think its a toll free number they are being given to call ; they will pay time-wise since dunia inaendelea na bado uniform (or is it dress-code) watavaa. Guess what mitihani watafanya!!!!
we can guess who the only losers in this story are.

The apparent police brutality n comical demeanor of the commish really really really irked me at first...and then i saw the blazing biuldings...especially the theatre and the one Nyayo hostel...n somehow,my ire with the cops subsided!!....i'm sorry...it jus did.

I'm pretty sure that a good number of the guys arrested by the cops were not involved in looting, burning blah. I know of one dude who was arrested after he had gone into one of the burning buildings to rescue someone who had got stuck there.

Usually in such a situation, there's the guys who wika 'comrade power' etc etc,get guys agitated, then slowly slink away to watch the 'fruits of their labour'. This time though, the fruits will be bitter, unfortunately, for all - whether you were throwing that stone,or running away from it all.

Unfortunately, many student unions leaders are in it for themselves, possibly as a launching pad for their future political careers...

It just boils down to COMMUNICATION,or the lack of it. It's a big problem in Kenya though, not just in KU.

Whatever the reason would be,nothing warrants the kind of destruction witnessed at KU..............Isn't it time we re-visited the issue of mandatory NYS training for prospective university students as was the case prior to the 8-4-4 system....??.....This system helped instil discipline, self believe and a couple life lessons to students then........

The 'fires&rootings' don't achieve much except wasted time, needless extra expenses, physical injury and sometimes death...that is how the students 'benefit'.

During our time, the chaos pinched us so hard that we decided to organize an informal anti-strike movement. Because of what?(sic) Because your seco. school desk mate who went to private uni would graduate while you are still in 2nd year 1st sem. We came to our senses...

It was a student initiative...no administration involvement or support...we were not successful all the time but we managed to prevent a few...until we graduated...

Then we let the guys behind us cook in their own fat...hehehe.

I always view undergrad students as kids (unfortunate but true. Even their behavior vindicates that position)...hata kama wako over 18. There is no justification for violent protest, but the VC has to be the bigger person...the adult. It is not an easy job...

I am still so fascinated by the rootings thing...now I understand why the students are so reluctant to sit exams...with such English, even I would be!

Now I understand why this forum was called the ultimate tribal elite gathering.

I fail to see how a snickering commish and an obviously incompetent VC are supposed to identify those that caused the chaos from those who were in their dorms actually studying for their exams the next day.

Let me look at your arguments

1. They should wear decent dress - why stop there. Let us have them all saved while at it and wear chastity belts

2. They should join the NYS - If your child needs to go to the NYS for discipline then that is your problem not mine. It is the parents duty to discipline their children. I never saw NYS ever. There is no NYS in MIT.They are still sharper than you and more disciplined. Has to do with parents.

3. They deserved it - This is an argument obviously propagated by those who have never seen the police in action during campus riots. I would not be surprised if they have arrested a cook and a lecturer in all this. I know for a fact that those who did the burning are not there. Even from video evidence, most of those arrested had no shoes. Can you imagine that. An arsonist without shoes. I would love to be the lawyer in that case.

4. 8-4-4 system - An argument that is as shallow as the messenger. Dismissed with the contempt it deserves.

As you can see all these are shallow arguments at best.

The problem I insist is the KU admin. If you do not communicate and instead enjoy your own students being beaten up by the police, then you are the problem. Note that even the lecturers union is not supporting her.

Those that burned the schools should be arrested and tried. I wonder who here believes the police are capable of investigating anything other than the next bribe they will get.

That woman needs an attitude adjustment or KU will burn again. If she can lie on camera that no student was hurt,I wonder what else she is lying about. Njunge you have to admit that the woman is a liar. We were treated to two liars yesterday. The commish and this woman.

As for those who love it when the police shoot people. I keep on saying, you should be very wary of what you wish upon others.

POINTBLANK.
Kumbe versity students dont change with time. The generation old tactics used by the likes of us are still at play. I thot this is IT & DOT COM era. They infact destroyed the very IT gadgets synonymous with their time. Please learn from the experienced, not from experience.

Decent dressing doesnt necessarily mean getting saved. Some of these students dress almost next nothing...so they were simply being told to wear clothes. They are being modelled in readiness for the job market. If you are an employer,am sure you would understand what decent dressing means to an organisation...

@All
Why have we turned into a violent society? Do all our woes have to be solved violently? No matter who was wrong or right in all this drama,i do not advocate for the immature violent route taken by these students.

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't..

Being the a woman VC in a public uni does not mean you close your eyes and insist on purninshing the students when just some form of dialougue would have solved the problems we witnessed jana. No VC has ever allowed police to get into the student halls of residence coz evidently the ones' that suffer in this case are never the hooligans causing the mayhem being witnessed!!!!

This woman is just very incompetent, what people don't realize is that the exams were being hurried so that the uni could cash in on the primo teachers who are just about to close schools to attend their lecturers at KU!!!!

tonyshark...yeah I am a proud and successful graduate of THE

njunge read about not electing luo leaders on this very post et al.

This is a disease in Kenya that is now spreading everywhere. No one wants to listen to another one.

This woman ( i just can't call her a VC),lied in public. The police lied in public. The students went stupid. This is the Kenya we are in.

If people cannot sit down and communicate their issues,I shudder and wonder what else is coming. The students, the admin and the police all failed in this scenario. Supporting any of them is actually shallow politicking.

The VC is supposed to be the symbol of proper thinking but I fail to see what good thing she has done. If you know of one positive thing she has done, please do share. The student leaders are just as pathetic. Let me not talk about the police. I would not be surprised if one of their tear gas canisters caused the fire. (That has happened before you know).

Communication must be there and it is obvious that that woman just doesn't know the meaning of the word. Lying is her forte and she has the commish to back her up.

I am still waiting for the person who will explain to me exactly what decent dressing is all about. If you ask me,I want all of you to wear buibuis. This is a college not your home business. Let them dress as they like or you might as well all join the mungiki.

as for simonkabz grow up and be more original. I have heard that too many times on this board.

we live in a period worse that the dark ages...because at this stage in human civilization we ought to be much better in our way of thinking but look at what is happening around us..

FYI it is not University students alone...its a depiction of the sorry state our society is in...we simply are backward...since these issues cut across board, our leaders are pathetic, lawlessness read mungiki, taliban, chinkororo,Saboat land defence etc, university riots, high schools,I don't need to mention all just look around.

at this rate we may be headed for real funk, before glimmer...maybe for our children 100years from today...

@ nanfor the more you rant and rave the more you betray your lack of maturity. Nothing justifies violence. Period. If you can't understand that then i'm sorry for you
