I found this to be ridiculous. For heavens sake - there is no difference between furniture and chocolate - they are consumables. Do such people still have the moral authority to point fingers?

These people make my head hurt. UK should now ban fact funding missions.

An MP says a Bill whose enactment could result in the reduction of the number of counties, senators and Members of the National Assembly is ready and would be tabled in Parliament when it resumes.

Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu wants the number of counties reduced from the current 47 to 10 or 11 and the number of Members of National Assembly from 349 to 180 to 210. The reduction of counties would effectively reduce number of senators and governors to 10 or 11.

Close to impossible in parliament. It's like voting for a retrenchment exercise at your work place. Only a referendum would see this happen.

A number of things need to happen for this kind of behaviour to stop for example:

1. Start throwing these people in jail. If Laws do not exist for this kind of waste then laws should be created.

2. Kenyans should encourage a culture of voting on issues instead of 6 piece voting or tribal voting.

These county leaders take their cue from national leaders. When they see the government building a lavish palace for the Veep, they also want a piece of the action.

#2 is highly unlikely. Just look at Wazua. But unless Kenyans stop with the sycophancy, this kind of behaviour will not stop.

In countries like Argentina, Egypt etc, people take to the streets in large numbers to protest whenever the government does ujinga. Here in Kenya we do the opposite. During the election period we flock to campaign rallies by the thousands to cheer on the very same people who are fleecing us.

THE Taita Taveta county assembly has justified its Sh12 million one-week trip to Zanzibar to learn about devolution.

All the 35 MCAs and the speaker were condemned by members of the public for misusing the money on a single trip at a time the county is faced by many challenges including high poverty levels, lack of water, poor road network among others.

On Sunday, speaker Meshak Maghanga told the Star on the phone their trip was successful and that the MCAs learnt. He said the trip only took two days and those who said it took seven days are propagandists.

โ€œZanzibar is far ahead compared to Kenya in matters devolution. They devolved two decades ago. Our trip was substantive,โ€ he said.

Maghanga said the MCAs travelled by road to Zanzibar making the trip less expensive. โ€œWe travelled by road unlike other leaders who travel by air, which is more expensive,โ€ he said.(and it cost 12 million for 2 days)

Majority leader Jonnes Mghanga and Governor John Mruttu's political advisor Kimonge Mbogho said the trip was proper and timely.

โ€œWe want the public to appreciate that these are transitional times and we must move around and spend money in order to learn from countries that instituted devolution before us.

All we are doing is for public good and we even have plans of going to Rwanda, South Africa, Japan, Germany and even the US so that we learn the very best ways of devolution. The money we use for these trips was planned for and we have decided to utilize it lest it is returned to the treasury,โ€ said the majority leader.

Mbogho said the county executive is not to blame for anything that is done by the county assembly because they are an independent arm of the county government.

His statement comes amidst claims within the public and social media that the county assembly members arm-twisted governor Mruttu to endorse their lucrative trip and allowances before they could pass the crucial education and finance bills.
