I'm just disturbed apparent lack of research by our Fourth Estate. The headlines in the dailies, their comments on social media shows some ignorance on some core issues. Sometimes am unable to distinguish their comments and the pedestrian talk. Where are our journalists trained and how is their curricular or is it their trainers? Some of them demonstrate fanatical following or are die-hards for certain politicians. Are journalists not supposed to be objective, no direct political affliations/ persuasions and tribal bigotry? Are there professional ethics for our fourth estate?

askwalubengo.com-open letter to kenyans.

Quote:
Kenyan Media ( And lots of media in general). It may come as a surprise to many that I fully supported and still support the new media bill. Now a law. Reason? Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers. That is what our media is (This aphorism applies to our Parliament as well as to our civil service.) Our newspapers can’t even get their grammar and spelling right. Our media is full of reporters, not journalists. All they care about is sales sales sales money money money profit. Always focusing on politics and bad shit. Maina Kageni, Ciku Muiruri and other ill-bred presenters peddle their nincompoopery on air the whole day and the Media Council sits on their hands and twiddles their thumbs up their ass doing nothing about it. And then you claim you can self regulate. Why do we allow vulgar music videos that are basically of porn to be played on tv in the middle of the day when even the countries where they come from don’t permit it? And The Nation. What was that picture you put on the front page the day after Westgate?

I agree..

I suppose they can take that extra mile, research on issues and inform Kenyans. They should at very minimum consult our laws and regulations contained constitution and various Acts of Parliament. In instances where their skills are limited they should consult experts in such matters before making sensational reporting!! my two cents

The fellows can't even pronounce the name of their trade - journalism - correctly; the say "JONALISM" instead of "JANOLISM"

And who ever told them that journalism is a profession? It is a "trade", like masonry and not a profession like civil engineering. That's why they have a trade union [KUJ] to campaign for their interests and not a professional institution to set standards of operation like the IEK or LSK or ICPAK or IIK [insurance] etc.

Curiously, those who contribute the best, well-researched and well-written pieces in the press [Gavin Bennett, Philip Kitoto, Pravin Bowry, David Ndii, Yusuf Dawood, etc] are not journalists!
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Applause Applause Applause You read my mind exactly. I was discussing this issue with a colleague in the office earlier. How many times have we seen a topic discussed here in Wazua and then a "journalist" does a story that is a copy paste, with nothing more to add? How many times have we seen a story on TV showing what the general public is saying about a certain legal issue without the "journalist" offering the actual correct position? These days they take what the politician says as gospel truth without any attempt to counter check the facts. By now, we should be knowing all details about the rail-way saga coz its an issue of utmost important to the nation. They should be offering facts that would help us tell who is telling the truth, yet all we are seeing is them reporting on what politician X said and what politician Y responded. No independent research at all even on obvious issues as comparisons of they type of railway in Ethiopia. I remember when TRUTHMETER started on Citizen, it used to show what a politician said and then counter it with the actual truth as per the law. These days it was converted to sarakasi show of which politician danced best. Had we even serious journalism in this country, the Wetangula issue would have been sorted by now, and @Ole lenku would not be feeling overwhelmed coz we would already be having the truth. I was told that our politicians have even known how to manage them, they just call them and pay them to write in a specific way. We even saw the other day on TV Sonko dictating the questions he wants to be asked by Jimmy Gathu. Most of the reporting they are doing on TV these days is what is already all over Twitter, Wazua, FB etc...watching TV to try and get a deeper analysis of an issue leaves you feeling you better follow on the discussion on Wazua where there might be intelligent interrogation of issues, goggles not withstanding. Its getting very bad...

I wonder what criteria these media houses use to hire these people. The quality of their presentations and interviews is wanting. These people cannot interprete the law or read a contract. Those who call themselves investigative jonalists are just story tellers thats all..

Yesterday there was a feature on Makueni and their lack of water. You'd expect the jonalist or is it reporter to interview officials of the Makueni/Machakos and Kajiado water companies or even anyone in the Ministry of water.. wapi just the Gov and women rep. Did he follow up with the MPigs to know why the issue hasn't been raised in parliament? That was a complete waste of time.

Idiot Press

they don't even consult spell check.

the online editions seem to have lots of sex related stories, i guess intended to keep a certain quota of readers interested. seems they have been influenced by landing threads on wazua so soon we should expect to read about LBT on the papers.
