No.1 on the list... S.S MEHTA CONSTRUCTION

2 years ago they filled potholes and did one half of Waiyaki Way and left the other half undone for almost 2 months. Caro Mutoko even castigated their work on Kiss. Now the road is torn to shreds from Uthiru to Westlands.

Yet they always seem to get contracts Not talking Not talking

Used the road recently, the done bit is fairly good (not to the standards of Rongo - Homabay) its only the remaining 22KM thats not good.

MATTAN CONSTRUCTION - The road contractor in Upper Hill beats them all hands down. Our office moved to Upper in Sept 2012 and this guy was on the ground digging trenches and doing excavation works , as at Jan 6th 2014 there is not an inch of tarmarc in place just the trenches. Bure Kabisa!

the reason for poor shoddy work lies in how ministry of roads manages the contractors eg
1. how the contractor is selected/competency/experience for particular road works.
2. contract sum. Can the contract sum allow for good quality materials procurement ?
3. guidance and supervision form roads engineers i.e are the engineers enough and making proper supervision?

In most international contracts eg the chinese contracts, all the above are present hence better quality. If kirinyaga contractors are supervised well, with well funded contracts and employ experienced labour, their roads will be as good as chinese but kickbacks, low govt engineer staffing and poor quality staffing/labour ensures we get lower quality roads.

oh pliz architect contract sums are always good but kickbacks are factored in so the actual cost is way below the recommended cost

For road construction, Chinese anyday .... Nyamasaria - Kisumu Airport - KK by-pass is coming out fine, very well done. While Kericho - Ahero is not yet finished since 2005.

@money..true..budgets are ok lakini the kickback part gives a serious dent to it..maybe we should institutionalise corruption so that the corruption part is officially added on top of the actual construction costs...d'oh!

The Chinese get a govt to govt deal.. once the papers are signed its as good as they will get their money back. They do everything from their pockets and wait for GoK to pay.. as they wait payment, they jump on to the next thing.

But a local contractor.. you even never know if you shall get your money, releasing of funds is usually haphazard so most of them only construct as the cash comes in.. and that is after they have taken their markups first..

@A4 have you ever used the Waiyaki way slip-off into Museum hill? Its a left turn-off but the road tilts almost 20degrees to the right, meaning a vehicle moving about 40kph can easily overturn right there.

@kollabo..yes. the design there is wanting. the junction where the slip road meets the over pass is even more dangerous with vehicles moving from slip road to over pass interweaving cars from over pass to ojijo road/K1.

The road construction is carried out by a contractor as per design specifications as contained in the tender. All projects have a Resident Engineer (RE) who is meant to ascertain that works are executed as per specifications. The RE endorses all Completion Certificates that forms the basis for payment by the client (KenHA, KURA, KERRA etc). If works are poorly done, I would blame the RE more than the contractor.

Where the design has issues like the Chiromo Road junction(Museum Hill) the two parties needed to have agreed in the on site design changes.
