The family should let the hospital keep the body.

Pole sana to the family.

Let them give what they can then write to the hospital requesting for waiver of the balance. If the hosptal is adamant do as Tycho has advised.

They have a system for waivers. Get advice from the ward in charge about the requisites and the process.
I care!

Firstly, under what circumstances did the lady lose her child and later develop post partum bleeding at Gatundu?

Secondly, KNH is notorious for detaining patients and the dead over unpaid bills.

Mourners were on Wednesday forced to fill up an empty grave after the body they had come to bury was disposed of by a hospital. According to relatives of 19-year-old Martin Chege, his body was allegedly disposed of by Kenyatta National Hospital without notifying them.

It is BAD BAD thing to do, but I think there must exist such a clause in the hospital admission forms; which most people hurriedly sign without reading well.
Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

On the contrary @Kamundu. The hypocrisy of this situation is what I see no reason to spare. For example, what rationality is being employed by a national hospital to it's 'poorest'?

If the hospital administration are as rational and humane as you wish to show, why is it that the story has to be brought to Wazua for the family to be referred to the social worker? Doesn't it sound odd that this grieving family has no clue that such services exist?

Even the person who wrote the bill should have referred them to the family. But he was indifferent.

Or is it that the social worker is testing the family's limits?

Then, why are you not suggesting that we contribute to the family? Why didn't @Pastor M?

Why didn't I? Because I have no money to give? You can simply have no money to give, because if you give one you must give all. Otherwise you must discriminate against some humans.

And clearly this very poor family is being discriminated against. And I can understand how being poor feels like. Life is so much discrimination till you start discriminating against yourself.

I remember one day, begging at the hospital's car park. I had exhausted the social worker. So I walk to this respectable man, and explain my situation, and the man gently refers me back to the social worker. That's when you discover you are poor indeed.

And I fear this may be what the family is going through. And I speak to them as a 'comrade'. If they are bottom rock, they have nothing to lose but their chains. They should start focusing on living and let the dead bury the dead.

@Tycho, you speak realistically and pragmatically.

Unless this family can do a harambee and raise 850k plus, to cover the hospital bills, mortuary stay and the funeral expenses, there isn't much else they can do. The social worker cannot waive a bill for close to a million. If they have links to the minister for health or a powerful politician, maybe. The press will not help much.

@tycho. Suppose this was wife... Would you go ahead and let them keep the body?
Im not seeing how @ Pastor M is getting any help from your advice.
I agree we have national issues to sort, but at this time.. The family needs the body. So lets give advice or help to make this happen.

@Kamundu........I feel you.

But believe me unless someone comes to their aid that will be the end result.

I will also tell you its something that happens every other day.People voluntarily run away when they find their rela has passed on and the bill is not one they can meet.Others who are not dead but are out of danger colludewith the nurses and security and disappear during the lunch hour visit.

Unfortunately poverty strips us human feelings.

This is a sad scenario. It is just one of the many similar ones in our country. It is a fact that many do not pay for NHIF because they are "not employed"
yet it would cost round-about ksh160 per month. If such a family had such a cover, how much more would the hospital demand from them?. Would the "social worker" or the hospital look at their case more favourably?
I care!

tell them to go to kituo cha sheria or ask lsk for free legal help. though hospitals usually detain bodies till fees are paid, it is illegal. a human body is neither property nor asset to be detained for fees.

@Kamundu, when you visit the maternity wards of Kenyatta or Pumwani, you'll find many women with children who've not even received a visit from the fathers or husbands for months after 'discharge'.

For a couple in the 'slums' getting even ten thousand shillings is a huge problem, and it's so shameful even for the man to step into the hospital for a visit.

Just the other day someone was recounting what his father used to do during meal time. The father would cook a big ugali and two eggs for himself and announce that ugali was for all, but each was to find his own 'mboga'. That's how children end up dragging magnets along ditches and end dying as robbery suspects.

Most girls are wives when childless and young, after that they are on their own. That's poverty for you. It doesn't know 'wife', 'child', 'father', or 'husband'.

Am not sure @Pastor M needs any advice. Or isn't he a pastor in some church/ministry with a congregation? A diocese or something? Or am I expecting too much?

If there's anyone who needs help, then it's the bereaved child and I have no bread for him, only stones.

Thank you all for your comments.Allow me to comment on some of the of what the family has done

1)Social Worker-went to social and they said they can only waive 25% so the bill will be about 650,000 of which the family cannot still afford by the way the Mother to the girl is mentally ill.

2)Funds drive maybe because of the family connection raising even a 100k will be issue.

3)Talking to politician the family tried to reach the governor and the MPs they are saying they are following the issue.....KNH has said that they will dispose the Body in 21 days

4)What I m doing now?I m trying to counsel the family to accept and forget the Body although its not easy for the family. But the question that I m asking can KNH after burying the Body still follow the family for payment of the Bill ?Another question that I ask myself why would do they retain the body and dispose the Body will that assist in payment of the Bill.

IS THERE ANYONE IN WAZUA WHO MAY BE ABLE TO TALK TO KNH MANAGEMENT OR MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND REASON WITH THEM ABOUT THIS ISSUE....(sorry if I sound emotional)

I think @ Pastor M you are on the right path.Let them hold a memorial service after 21 days to bring closure to the matter.

Whatever money they collect should assist the living left behind and not going to Kenyatta who have the ability but lacking the will to waive the funds.

Let Kenyatta keep and dispose the body.Keep counselling them.

Hospitals can't allow you to pledge security like land?

This is sad, the way many people can't even afford raising even a quarter of that figure! It means a lot of bodies are disposed off this way?

Maybe they try writing to their former MP wa Gatundu South?

such costs are not covered under Jubilee manifesto's free maternity services which was launched as soon as Jubilee came to power?
