Bought a RAV4 2002 about 2 months ago and I have already had to change the transmission as it was slipping. I am looking for the car's engine control module as it appears that this is the part damaging the transmission and if I do not replace it I will have to buy new transmission all over again.

Anyone with ideas where I could get an ECM for this car?

Search for 'rav4 engine' using the sk search. An skerian called Alfa had the exact same problem and there are contacts of people who can help.

@All,

Is this not more proof that RAv4 is a problematic car?

Thanks. I have checked out the other threads.

RAV4 transmission trouble is quite common (unfortunately I found out after experiencing the problem). Apparently the ECM installed in these cars is faulty and after about 60,000 miles it fails and damages the transmission. Signs to look out for are the consistent check engine light coming on,gears shifting erratically and at times the car jerks or simply slows down to a near stop before picking up speed again.

I have since changed the transmission but I am not putting the car back on the road as that would be a death wish. Anyone with a RAV4 for 2001- 2003 should be on the look out for these signs unfortunately it also occurs without the check engine light coming on and you will only realise when the transmission is damaged.

The car was shifting from 4th gear to 2nd,it could revv at about 4,000 RPM while at 30Km per hour!! The worst bit was slowing down to a near stop before picking up speed again.

To realise the magnitude of the problem just 'google' RAV4 transmission trouble.

After futile attempts to get the ECM of this car I had to go to Toyota Kenya and got the part for Ksh 105K. IBC Japan qave me a quote of USD 3,600! Problem with Toyota is the delivery period which took 7 weeks instead of the promised 3 in as much as it had to be ordered from Japan (I did not hear of a ship from Japan being hijacked) then they refused to fit the part claiming that once a car has been handled by anor garage they do not do any work on such a car.

I managed to get a guy to fit the comp and have the key programmed and the car is back on the road. If you are to buy a RAV4 2001 onwards just ensure that it is fitted with a modified ECM. I would know having spent 235K on the car (Gearbox 130K and the ECM at 105K).

I pity those whose RAV4's have the faulty ECM as the day will come when they will go through such a nightmare.
