Been farming hay for sometimes but am not very happy with the yield per acre and also the returns. its harvesting time and I want to know a few things in preparation for next season 1.what is the expected yield per acre 2.what can I do to improve yield per acre 3.Market as per this time(Rhodes bowman variety) 4.Fertilizer , when and what type to apply any one with experience in this area help

am preparing to do fifteen more acres next long rains what other varieties can I choose from apart from Bowman Rhodes

In Nairobi we buy a bale at between ksh160-200/-

I know of one called Star Grass. That is all I know about hay farming for now.

Do you mean Boma Rhodes or Bowman Rhodes type of grass?

Hi Wazua, Got 4 acres I would like to plant hay while I wait for some titles.The land is near Kabarack along the Nai-Eldoret highway. How many times can one plant in a year,what is the expected yield per acre, price per bale & things to lookout for?

Correct me if am wrong,the likes of boma rhodes are only planted once ...then you cut when they reach a required height....from a leaflet I have from Kenya seed co they are claiming it can yield up to 200 bales per season....per acre...

Twice an year around august- September and December-february productivity depends on a number of factors You apply fertilizer a month or so after harvestI usually do C.A.N)(. Returns not very good these days heavy rains alot of fodder hence poor prices but still a good deal if you dont have the time to manage other products The most import thing is storage after harvest it get rained on you are done and you have to pay the guys doing bailing so Build a store or have a ready market

Hi Hay farmers, How did it go guys?i want to venture atlest with 10 acres. Marketing is not a problem to me,my challenge is growing the Hay itself. 1.Pitfalls to avoid 2.Can the planting be done using people to broadcast instead of a machine
