Clearly Kenya played much better and with more consistency when Friday came in. I think the article above has touched on some of the issues with local coaches: favouritism, poor selection, inability to enforce discipline. Also the fact that the Union simply does not respect them so they cannot make demands about how the team should be supported. Ayimba and Friday: Number 5 finish in a series, one main cup finals in a series, a semi final in the world cup.....pretty similar if you ask me!!!!! In which year did Kenya finished 5th under Benja ? I think his best finish was 6th in 2009. Also Friday only had one year with the team. Had he stayed several years as Benja did, I think he woulda taken Kenya to several more cup finals maybe even won. I agree, the best was 6th but you can't compare the resources Mike had with what Benja had, so long we don't give local boys an equal chance we will always look for foreigners.....look at RSA, after Treu they have appointed a coach with no big international history but at least he knows the local rugby well!!! what people don't know is that Mike Friday was coaching by Skype!! he was always in UK. this brought around friction in management and was a considered point of review if his contract was to be extended. people always see the roof builders finishing the roofing and exclaim that those guys have done a wonderful job not knowing that building a house is a process. lots of sweat and blood has going into making the team what it is. years of coaching and capacity building. Benja is in my opinion the architect of this team... he built it and when Mitch took it over for a while and experimented with younger folks we got to know the young folks with capacity and the old blood that were irreplaceable. P.S. Toti has played for Kenya 7s for many many years... way before some people discovered rugby 7s. He knows rugby 7s more that anyone I know including Benja! Benja found him playing for kenya 7s. @masukuma, I totally agree with you, infact Friday almost didn't discover any new talent for the 7s team!!! If you look at the contract Treu's agent is asking for, they want to cover their ass, earn their money and then walk away....where does money suddenly come from when we sign a foreign coach??? Reminds of that Harrambee Stars coach who could not speak English but was earning millions every month. That aside, I wish our boys all the best starting tomorrow in the 1st leg of the IRB7s series!!!! ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

Was the B team Friday's invention or what changed is the fact that more resources were allocated for developing the same during his time??? ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

And that is one of the key points why a foreign coach is needed. A foreign coach forces the Union to be professional instead of running the team in a jua kali manner. Local coaches will agree to work without a contract which leaves them vulnerable: If they complain about poor resources they are fired. By the way, Benja's last season was really poor. I wont even talk about Mitch or others like Bill Githinji.

@Alba, it's funny some you have resigned yourself to the fact that a local will never get the right environment to take the team places!!!! Gold Coast 7s is on tonight/sat morning.....wishing, our boys all the best!!!! Mitch may be faulted for many things but his eye on focusing on the future i.e. team 2016 for the olympics was admirable - get the guys to taste the big leagues early and by 2016 we would have a totally youthful team. Australia has been doing the same over the last 3-4 years. this team of theirs is becoming more lethal year after year. We need foresight! it may feel nice to win a round in the HSBC sevens but to me winning the Worldcup and the Olympic Gold in Rio is what we should be aiming for. All Mushrooms are edible! While you patiently wait for Mitch to build a team for 2016, Kenya was on the verge of loosing its IRB core status. Kenya would have been demoted to playing only in Dubai and SA kama hapo zamani. The poor performance would have caused sponsors to pull out and the public to loose interest. And there is no guarantee that Kenya would be successful in 2016 because of what Mitch built. Long story short, you cannot use the IRB sevens series to build for the future. If you want to build for the future you can field younger players in lesser tournaments like Safari sevens or Rome sevens or Twickenham sevens. The IRB sevens requires grizzled veterans.

Yes because a local coach will be pushed around by KRFU. In Kenya some officials even go as far as dictating who should be selected. They cant pull such stunts when the coach is a Friday or a Treu or even a Logarusic for that matter.
