"The government plans to ban importation of furniture in a move aimed at ensuring Kenyans buy locally made products, which will create jobs for those in the Jua Kali sector.
Industrialization PS Dr. Wilson Songa says his ministry has scheduled meetings with those in furniture making to help them enhance their capacity to meet local demand after which the ministry would outlaw furniture importation.
To support those in the informal sector, president Uhuru ordered ministries to give priority to local suppliers especially for products that can be made locally such as furniture.
The ministry of industrialization has picked this up and plans to make it hard for anyone to import furniture unless for very few exceptional cases.
Dr. Songa says his ministry plans to indulge those who make furniture to enhance their capacity to meet local demand before the ban is effected.
Speaking at his ministry’s stand at the Nairobi International ASK show, the PS said his ministry is keen to revive textile industries that collapsed and focus on agro-processing as well as the leather sub-sector to create jobs for Kenyans."
