The most amazing thing is that it was discovered in Turkana where they need the water most

Turkana has a lake that never dries, if this has never been harnessed then making use of this resource is like a dream!!!!

Turkana has always had water! That Lake has been evaporating uselessly into the desert for millenia. Massive water and fish resources right there, while the locals starve. All they needed was a little serikali help to set up solar pumps in the vicinity of the lake and boom! Green paradise. There is nothing we will do with that new reservoir if we haven't done anything with the lake itself. We will not use the reservoir (which costs a fortune to access) if the open lake has been lying there for generations.

this comment is embarassing. @mc. consider deleting. next u will be arguing that coastarians shud not complain about water coz they have the indian ocean. this discovery is as big as the oil finds.

Isn't Turkana an alkaline lake?
yes it is thats why the water is un drinkable, but the water underground (over 100KM below surface) is fresh

Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly ...so it's easier to the get the water 100KM below than purify the alkaline water!!!

Wacheni kuropokwa wajameni. Even the deepest level below the ocean surface is not that deep!!!!

Kama mafuta inapatikana 1.2km below the earth surface, kwani hii maji yenyu ni magma?

The water discovered is only 300 m below surface..water is life.

Not unless the jamaa has some very advanced knowledge on desalination, na huyu jamaa sio mjinga, then we would be the fools, otherwise i agree, aibu kubwa!

Asi!@MC is opposing the water find ama ni nini? Do we need a toothcomb on this one? hahahaha..There is a time we landed at an airstrip(sio landing ya wazua),i forget the name and the heat in that place is unimaginable. So kama kuna tone ya maji imepatikana huko, hiyo ni habari njema, let's remain positive, opposition sio kusema mlima kenya uko pwani

Thought last year scientists said Africa lies atop some huge water deposites..

But people should stop looking for hype/feelgood over breaking news..
Unless that water gushes out and starts meadering all acrossTurkana.. then essentially what we are saying is we cann now dig boreholes. which is what has been neglected for years. just what Mcdoba hass insinuated in previous post..
Has the GoK sent rigs and earth movers as an emergency already?

Maji iko? Halafu?

Halafu we will use it to fulfill the dreams in the manifesto, one such dream is irrigating some (i forget the figure) hectares of land

this is not possible! The continental crust is typically from 30 km to 50 km thick.
The temperature of the crust increases with depth, reaching values typically in the range from about 200 °C (392 °F) to 400 °C (752 °F) at the boundary with the underlying mantle. 100kms is way into the mantle where temperatures range between 500 to 900 °C in the upper regions. no water exists at those depths.

Poleni kisugu ndio ilikuwa imesidi
->The aquifer is approximately 100 km (62 miles) by 66 km (41 miles).
->It has a surface area of 4,164 km2.
->It contains an estimated 200 billion cubic metres of fresh water.
->Lotikipi alone holds 900% more than Kenya's current water reserves..
-> To hit water you'll drill 300m Umetosheka sasa?

As for makerege construction of a desalinator is about $2.9 billion excluding maintenance and investing in the technical know how. So which is better drill or tap a drying lake?

How come these days you seem to be bila news bytes? Siku za breaking ziliisha

So whats the plan? Drill and create a river meandering through the North West?

Dont they still require to drill boreholes as has been the case?

Or we are happy because since it is breaking news. Explored by the Japanese and UN agency, and announced by the govt after being first being news in the Beeb a day earlier?

As a person who has done consultancy on the matter in that area.. shida sio hiyo maji there has always been water down there, how much is what is breaking news. how to get it out is what has always been the problem
A modest complete water system will cost 100m drilling, pumping and storage
Now. if the news was 10billion discovered to drill n supply water for Turkana. I would be celebrating...
the rest is good facts. like the icebergs at poles being fresh water yadda yadda yadda...

Note. its the water in the lake that is alkaline.. what about the rivers flowing into it?

"Mwafrika nywele ngumu, mambo yake ngumu tu!"- Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi

lets not be confrontational just because its Mc Reggea who questioned the big deal on the discovery.

@murchir, my statement on 100Kms is a typo I think from the way one of the media houses reported the same but my point remains....too much excitement on something that there will be little follow up on, it's not like Kenya lack water per'se but there has been no deliberate actions by Kenyans and the Grament to harvest water for it's use......HECK even rain water that is the easiest to harvest is a problem yet we now shout about some undergraound water aquifer......pulizzz!!!!!!

....I like the way my comment brought out even those who have been hiding in a hole for some time and the other having to to consult google before giving a a reply sounding the most knowledgeable people on earth!!!!

The lack of action by past governments should not be used as reasons to do nothing now at the government and the personal level.

The main role of gava is to de-risk the process of natural resources exploitation. Its interesting that during the Moi error, we had nothing, during Obako's all this wealth discoveries started trickling in, and now with the UHURUTO government, we are realising that we have massive mineral potential and now enough water under the scorching Turkana landscape to quench the thirst of the whole country.

The most important thing is that we now know where to get water should we need some more, we had no idea about the Turkana water potential yesterday. This is good news and worth shouting about methinks.
