Mmmmmmhhhhhhh...When I read this the picture of Makuyu and Kameno came to mind...with a river flowing right in the middle. Images of Waiyaki, Joshua, Nyambura, Muthoni, Kabonyi and Kamau played back in my memory. I could remember my Literature in English teacher (a Mr Gerald Gahima) vividly painting the thematic concerns in the novel chief among them being the change brought about by colonialism and the accompanying division and culture conflict...That was almost over 20 years ago. I am yet to read a better novel written by a Kenyan that portrays life in its totality as the white man set out to establish himself in Kenya...That is The River Between...
Weep not Child... and many more...What a writer... He deserves to win this...

I typed something then I deleted. I found Ngugi's works as too complicated. I read The River Between and Petals of Blood and could not fail but note the big difference between the 'friendliness' of books written by Chinua/Ekwensi vs Ngugi's tough approach.

But maybe I read them when I was too young. I should try re-read them.
