My nephew is mad about Animation and stuff and he wishes to pursue it as a career.I know nothing about this line of trade and i have no idea what he wants to lead to.One thing i am certain is that,even though he is not doing fine arts in high school,the young man has a deep passion for arts and he is very good at it going by some of his works which i have seen.He spends hours indoors doing what he likes most and when not at it,he will be listening to music.He is also an ardent fan of cartoons and video games and he finds alot of amusement watching 3D movies such as ice age et al.Which is the best way foward for this mboy.What's the best course to pursue and which are the top colleges in this line?....All positive contibutors will be blessed mpaka waparare.

Books by Preston Blair, access to adobe cs, a 'decent' computer, and access to the internet are enough to set him off.

The challenge he may meet is on scripting. But a journey begins with one step.

try shang tao. used to know one of the founders (if not the founder) when it was being set up and was pretty impressive. don't know if he is still there or it has grown into a better college.

@njunge, get him a comp and 3dmax, cimema4d, maya softwares plus internet for him to google for free youtube tutorials.
Show him how to use torrents or demo versions to get these softwares.
From there he is good to go.

if you can get him to a college the better at least he will learn some standards in the fine art field, for degree kenyatta university has a fine arts course, buru buru school of arts, the former kenya polytechnic ... all have courses in the field.

the schools won't teach him much skills, but at least he will be introduced to standards, best practices and he might get some good networks in the field.

the rest, get a decent comp, prefarably a desktop with an external graphics card slot - ideally it would be better if you assembled the comp, a good motherboard, decent power supply with good cooling features, the best graphics card you can afford, lots of ram > 8gb, a wide monitor > 17" and of course a powerful processor - then let him inulge

The good news is that this and major creative arts fields require more of a practical exposure than four years in college. These standards keep changing are being changed by those practising in the market.

For the record, I am not against the college Idea but four years ni mingi sana for such an hands-on venture.

Opportunity Cost.

That cash may be well utilized by using it as capital to set up a full studio [ Business ].

Lessons learnt are priceless this way & no amount of theory can replicate.

Remember, in this industry, product inajiuza. What @Njung'e may have to guide him through is how to make competitive pitches to potential clients.

@All,

Great and very valuable contribution from you all.I am digesting everything as i consider a way forward.The argument here would be whether to take the boy to a college or get him the equipment and necessary software(s) and get him going on his own.I should be able to make a decision hereafter.

@Mkenyan/All,
I have heard about ShangTao (Hazina towers?).They aren't answering my mails while their website is vague and very short on relevant information.Ishould pay them a visit but currently,i am way away from town.Any more information will be appreciated.

@M7,
Thanks buddy.Is this it?. I will try and reach Fatboy.

Thanks All And Keep Them Coming

Actually for heavy graphics, core i5 and above is recommended.

unfortunately lost contact with the guy long time. don't know if he is still even there. njun'ge i understand homeboyz also have some great college for animation. that they charge something like 150-200k for traning. you should give them a call or a visit. at the very least they would give you better advise on the available options for your nephew.

I forgot to add: Commission a one minute movie, agree on a price, and timelines, which he will determine.

I have a friend who went to Shang Tao. He was passionate and worked long hours alone. That's what made him good. Introduction lessons are all over the internet and on multimedia.

Pay your nephew what you want to pay Shang Tao. If he can't pull it, bring him to me nimfundishe kunoa kisu hapa mtaani.

3d animations is more or less similar to architecture. Most of the stuff, someone has to teach themselves eg software use, marketing, current design trends etc etc

Once you show him how to fish, instead of giving him the fish, if he has the drive, he will excel. A good comp plus internet for tutorials is all he needs.

Nothing beats teaching yourself through tutorials and trial & error. He sounds committed and self-driven enough to manage this as he'll need to motivate himself.
