the lunatic express took between 1896 and 1901 to construct between Mombasa and Kisumu. this is despite a number of resistances from a number of communities along the route some of which were nearly full blown wars.

the SGR is slightly wider (1.435m between the inside edges of the rails) than what we have. If we retain what we have, then we require a parallel way-leave alongside the lunatic Express.

As for mode of operation, the current is locomotive (where the engines pulls all the load from the front). What is proposed is different..... diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) where a diesel engine drives an electrical generator or an alternator which produces electrical energy. The generated current is then fed to electric traction motors on the wheels or bogies. this produces trains that gain speed faster and stops fasters

If only the politicians had the taxpayers intrest at heart they should have considered changing the current sleepers from the current one meter gauge to the SGR along the path of the lunatic express. considering KR has alot of idle rail lines all over the country this woould have drastically reduced the cost and duration of the project.

Yeah, diesel-electric; the powerhouse is on board.
The one we are talking about is that type suplied power by overhead cables or the third-rail.

The locomotives will also be supplied from China, so the project comes with a full package.

I would rather we do German locos than Chinese; RELIABILITY and motive POWER!
