It will be a different rail track , the existing Kenya- Uganda rail line is a narrow gauge line and cannot interchange or be connected to Standard Gauge Rail. Therefore if Uganda , Rwanda want to be connected to the new line they will also have to adapt the standard gauge railline. This is where the Chinese will reap benefits.

The SGR will require that we invest massively in new locos, wagons and coaches!!! Who will sell us all these?

On the issue of the interchange, UG and Rwanda can maintain their narrow gauge but construct a major inland/dry dock at Malaba border so that they can transfer goods to their trains!

I am however deeing massive massive relocation of masses and this may impact negatively on UK's re-election in 2018!
I know UK will delay this project so that it starts well into his second and final term!

Grainbulk Handlers is building a dry dock in Tororo named Great Lakes. They must have seen ahead.

I like the business acumen of these RAO friends...they know the countries in the hinter-land will not have enough money to move with speed the Kenya is moving with and construct an SGR.

These are the hard figures..

The shs425Billion from China will cover a number of projects including the standard gauge railway to Malaba and wildlife etc...

www.businessdailyafrica....82/-/n4jmwv/-/index.html

The standard gauge railway will itself cost about shs320billion and will take up majority of China's money...

www.corporate-digest.com...n-infrastructure-project

The remaining 100Billion will most likely be deployed in other sectors!

That railway will be up & running in no time with this financing! smile

A project of this magnitude cutting across the landscape will surely encounter challenges eg, land displacements, environmental concerns, wildlife activists etc...I support the project but give it a timeline of 4 to 5 Years from now.

Without corruption and local politician interference and with the Chinese speed this project should take 3 years...but nawezawait 5 years.

Railway is my thing and I wish the gaament can involve me in the design and setting up stages.

I know some of the best diesel locos from Germany which are as reliable as electric locos, the type of locos used in Israel.

ION:Israel being one of the tech-savvy country has no got no single kilometer of electric train; all trains are diesel propelled, in types of powerhouses pulling/pushing the wagos and other are DMU's. I once boarded one from Tel-Aiv to Haifa.
