a mate of mine in the UK just got a sweet deal on a 2011 range rover evoque 2.2 SD4 which is basically new as it has only done 25 delivery miles for 27 and a half thousand quid,the guy wants to ship the car to kenya in a few months, the shocker came in when i looked at the CRSP price in kenya which is 11m which i am assuming one would pay to whoever sells brand new range rovers in kenya these days. this got me wondering, if i wanted to buy an evoque and had 11m with me would i buy it here or import it brand new from UK? well i did some projections using my mates purchase above as an example and found out that on some luxury brands kenyans are utterly being ripped off, here goes;
brand new range rover evoque in kenya = 11,000,000
brand new evoque 2011 evoque in UK = £27500 = Ksh 3,712,500
taxes to be paid to KRA on import = 3,085,057 {using 2 yr depreciation rate}
lets put shipping and other associated costs at 500k
3,712,500+3,085,057+500,000=7,297,557
11,000,000-7,297,557=3,702,443
from the above we can see that one would save over Ksh 3m if you were to buy the car from the UK rather than walking into a local showroom and zooming off with one after parting with Ksh 11m
