it will cost you at least 120000 for a 3 bedroom house to install all that stuff and you charge after 3 or 4 days.you will save so much for your electricity bills.do the math if you pay 3k to 10k per month for elec for 25 years....a lot yes yes.time to take charge

We had a discussion on this a few weeks ago...it turned out that a system that can re-place KPLC in an urban household will cost at least a million bob.....check the archives

The solar power installation cost for that amount (120K) cannot even run a 5 cu-ft fridge,forget the iron box!!!KPLC is still here to chew us albeit for some years to come.

@ lexus,

it is cheaper to install solar electricity to run small loads (lighting only)...this may not go beyond 300watts assuming that all the lights are switched on and on condition that you use the low energy lamps (20watts or less)....however if you start considering other appliances like Tv,fridges,ironing,microwaves then your power demand rises sharply to above 2000watts,and like mukiha says you would require 1m plus for this....

@therealshaft I'm going for this immediately I spare a few coins. I've been postponing at home (shags) where power is still far across the river!

@therealshaft

Thanks for the breakdown on solar power. The last time i checked,a 45W shurjo solar panel was costing around 26k. Where can one be gotten at 9,500 and which make is it?

I installed one for my paros in shags in 2008 cost roughly Ksh 160,000. Major costs:

150 Watt Panel - 80,000

I000 Watt Inverter - 30,000

Two 100 AH Batteries - 19,800 (9,900 each)

Charge Controller - 6,000

Rest of cost goes to installation charges and accessories.

This system supports 12 energy saving bulbs and a 21 Inch colour TV you can also do some light ironing. All the lights are on AC hence consumption is a bit high. I intend to re-wire the lights to DC and install a smaller inverter for the TV. Other option is to isolate the lights from the TV and install a separate panel and battery bank for each.
