IMHO, we overestimate our strategic value to the US, and wrongly think that the Chinese are benevolent benefactors who will reach down and pull us up from our miserable economic situation.
The Chinese are sharks, and they will extract terms of business unfavourable to us if we keep turning overtures from other countries. We need both the West and the East. Emotions have no place in diplomacy, and we are no Russia, which has like a third of the world's hydrocarbon energy deposits (hence really can't be ignored) ....Iran has way more oil and natural gas, can cripple that critically important Hormuz strait and the West still happily slipped a noose around its exports and banking and tightened.
