Why are many here assuming that the staff are on the wrong. The staff have a right to proper compensation.

On the issue of poor service, that is a management issue, not a staff issue. It is the obligation of management to benchmark expectations, employees will always do the minimum they can get away with.

I would not rush to pass judgement without complete knowledge of what the employees are asking for,and how it compares with the other airlines and other companies in kenya.

I am not surprised that employees are feeling cheated if the management/pilots vs rest of staff pay ratio posted below is accurate, reminds me of our politicians vs other public workers.

Monday,20th July 2009……Kenya Airways has today announced extensive enhancements to its Mombasa flight schedule, including increasing its weekly flights from the current 27 to 58 flights per week, beginning this month.

The carrier has also introduced a special price offer to Mombasa of Shs 5,500 return and Shs 2,750 one way exclusive of taxes.

The airline will fly the larger Boeing 767-300ER which can accommodate up to 250 passengers to serve the high frequency Mombasa route on Wednesdays and weekends, depending on demand.

Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer,Bram Steller said the new enhancements are in response to increased demand from business and tourist travelers.

“We are fully committed to offering a superior, value driven product that gives travelers a reason to choose us over the competition,” Steller said.
“We’ve already seen stronger customer response to our more aggressive pricing strategy and continued focus on customer service excellence, resulting in record bookings over the past month. With today’s announcement,we offer great service and customer-friendly schedules to all the towns we serve from our JKIA hub.”

Today’s announcement is part of a series of product and service enhancements focusing on customer value and convenience that Africa’s leading carrier is launching throughout 2009.

There is nothing like a 'right to proper compensation' & I am sure they are paid more than the minimum wage... people often over-estimate themselves... how many take a pay cut on the basis their performance is not up to par?
*** Every person has the right to quit employment. So quit & go find another job. Or better create new jobs... former janitors of KQ started a janitorial firm that cleans the aircraft as well as do other jobs (expansion)... Striking (& disrupting) others from doing their jobs is wrong & should be dealt with.
**** I bet you that KQ is one of Kenya's better employers. And what is Kenya's unemployment rate? 50%?

@VVS

I insist there is something like a right to proper compensation. Offcourse proper compensation is relative to different people and subjective to companies.

That KQ is one of the better payers in Kenya is expected as it is one of the top companies, you can't go back and compare it to KBS or City Council. There comparative employers should be Emirates,SAA,Virgin and other airlines and big businesses like BAT,EABL and Safaricom among others.

That Kenya's unemployment rate is at 50% has nothing to do with KQ employees

@VVS: I agree with Obi wan that there is a right to proper compensation. You cannot tell a pilot you will pay him 20k and tell him that is what the company is offering! I wish all professions could come up with a standard remuneration package like the lawyers have done!

@Obi wan! If I was a KQ employee (I'm assuming we are talking about the flight attendants here) I would be very peeved to note that my salary should be at par with those of Emirates and Virgin! The disparity is humongous!

it's obvious that VVS doesn't know anything about KQ as an employer.

Some mentioned something like comparing KQ as an employer with other airlines in the region or blue chip companies in the Kenya in the same league as KQ. KQ's flight attendants are paid 1/4 or what their SA,QR,EK and Virgin equals are paid. Talk about commercial,finance,technical..... name them staff who are not in management are paid around 1/3 their equals in QR,EK and Virgin.

KQ's pilots, most of them form four leavers, are paid more than EK and QR pilots. Junior managers in KQ story yao hata I don't know where to start!!!

Safcom,EABL,BBK,Equity,Microsoft E. Africa,NGO's,UN,EK,QR among others are actively fishing from KQ,reason...... well trained but poorly paid staff.

Apparently, what is fuelling alll these problems is the pilots salos plus utilities... and before you start shooting me,know that KQ has a lot of cash.

Disclaimer: I don't work for KQ,I just happen to know stuff about KQ.

Just to correct you, most KQ pilots are NOT form four leavers, and thats a FACT.

So what if pilots are 'form 4 leavers' as you describe them? What's important is to obtain valuable post-secondary training and experience and that doesn't necessarily mean obtaining a degree. What would you rather get: pilot training that costs millions and therefore gives you leverage with employers ama a degree that's so common that employers quote 15k a month take it or leave it?

Pilots need to be paid well so that they can recover the colossal cost of their training. While rich parents can sponsor their kids for jet flying school without going into debt, middle class parents have to drown in debt. So pilots with the latter need to inherit that colossal debt otherwise their parents won't be able to retire or pay medical bills.

LOL... if you feel you are NOT 'properly compensated' then you QUIT... @Obi @ Jaggy and as for those who think QR,EK,SA pays better then LEAVE and run do not walk...
*** EK & QR have been poaching KQ staff for years. The so-called 'well-trained' staff is trained at KQ's expense. So if they are bound by contract to KQ for 5 years then they should think before training at/by KQ.

So if you can't compare KQ to KBS or NCC (Kenyan firms) then WHY would you compare KQ to non-Kenyan firms like SAA,EK?

'That Kenya's unemployment rate is at 50% has nothing to do with KQ employees'

Erm,who said that? Please keep your misquoting to yourself... What I said was that since Kenya's unemployment rate is 50% so... there are many choices/recruits for those janitorial, baggage handling jobs...
