What is your take on Container houses for our country? Have a look....

and dont think about the heat/cold...that is normally taken care of,they build these houses abroad where summer temperatures are higher than here....

@Vickey Tah I thot about this idea back in 2006 and I thot it was very viable especially since because of the cost of a container. Also the fittings can be done without being to expensive. It was part of a slum upgrading plan I was working on. Now more than ever I think it is it esp with wat I have seen on th link. But I think its workable but al read more on it!!

@ Tycoon...I have been into a container house in Nairobi,and it is veryy good/comfortable etc...I think this can be done as slum upgrading,i'm just not sure about the expense of padding the walls and also container costs should have gone up now..you shouldnt have given up on the idea..

@Vickey The padding expenses i doubt r high. We can use locally available materials eg gunny bags and add some material not sure yet what in between the walls the gunny bags.
However I never gave up on it. Seeing us no one is doing it large scale it is very viable. I just had to pursue other more viable interests. Also the issue of slum upgrading at the time was very thorny as it was before the elections. However now I think it can be done plus also what I saw on th links can be used in Kenya esp regarding the air conditioning asspect.
What I like is that it is very cheap compared to building stone houses.

I also pondered on geting a container hse.after doing my research and tryin to involve wify,she vehemently refuted even the thought.wel what i found out is : the cost of a 40x10 box-kshs ? (didnt get) u can use styropor to insulate the walls n ceilin an 8x4 goes for about 1400.u also need plywood clading to protect the insulation,same size goes for around 800.on the floor lay 25mm th blockbd - 2000. A rectangular stone,single pitch,size 12x10 wil set u back 80k.

Kindly note that as a standard,shipping containers will have a wooden floor or one made from synthetic materials.Wood used is treated against termite attack for up to 50 years.As for the sides,you can use silica slabs to insulate against extreme weather.Catch some more alongside Vickey and Tycoon on the link above.

@Njunge am not really new. I remembered that thread last year its a coincidence that both were started on the 16th of June.
Anyway the possibility is good and i have seen all the solutions. I was considering doing this project on a large scale all over Kenya and with all i have read in all the links provided its something I would do as a business.
I also have a friend who uses a concept from SA called MOLADI to build houses in 15 days and the houses are as strong and as durable as stone houses. This concept takes the cost of a 2 bdr to about 800-900k for everything including land.
