Was it a miscalculation on the part of Moi by shielding Raila from the gallows despite there being a strong case for his hanging? The more I read about the coup, the more puzzled I get about Moi. Could it be he had deep respect for Jaramogi? Could it be he viewed the Odingas as possible future allies(which they became in the next decade)? Or was it a case of avoiding to touch one community's royal family?

I find Moi a Godly Man, and it's highly probable that he worked for the greater good of our nation state, and that in this case he found balance in the presence of the Odingas. For, had he killed Raila, then enemy forces would be concentrated on him, and government fall on unsteady hands.

The idea was shared equally between the Luo and the Kikuyu supremos......it's the leadership of the coup that was a problem.....very strong in spirit but somehow clueless heads.

The Kikuyus tried to replace Mo1 b4 the old man died but ikakataa..the Luo tried to take by force. Hio pia ikakataa...@Lolest on your comment above, its possible there was some outside intervention too.

The real sponsors of the coup developed cold feet when it became apparent that the immediate benefactors would not be from their own......people have rarely wanted to get the real details of this coup.

I'm also puzzled that he spared Matiba's life. Or was he as good as dead when they released him from detention?

It's odd people don't understand the real facts on this coup.......the more reason they are confused understanding MO1's actions.....the teacher knows the whole truth behind the coup hence his actions/inactions.

You vannot compare the two. Moi would have beeen justified to hang both Odinga the father and Odinga the son. What happpened to matiba was wrong
